Feb 18, 2013 Canandaigua Connected ENewsletter
Ok, I admit it. I'm an alternative thinker. But, how boring would the world be if we all thought exactly the same way? If George Washington, TJ ( I'm on that kind of nickname basis with him because he's my favorite), and John Adams all agreed right off the bat the first time the delegates met, would our Declaration of Independence and Constitution be the powerful documents they (still) are today? I think not. We need the struggle, the varying opinions, the great debates and the individual thinkers. We don't need (or want, for that matter) everyone to fall in line and agree. That being said, I received a bit of angst over the 'love yourself on Valentine's Day' sentiment in my opening last week. Of course I love my husband and kids. I bought them the Fundip valentines they begged for and we all went to Sakura to celebrate the big Vday. It's just that I've seen a lot of pain and hardship from many people who look to others to make them happy. I was just trying to say that once you look within, a whole new world of possibilities surfaces that makes you realize all others are the icing on the cake.

Common Core Watch
What is Common Core?
Common Core is the set of learning standards that 45 states agreed to as part of a 2009 national educational initiative called "Race to the Top". New York State received 700 Million dollars in federal funding to adopt these standards. Canandaigua's portion of this was approximately $125,000.
What is Required?
Each district has to adopt these learning standards but the curriculum/lesson plans they use to reach these standards is up to them. The Canandaigua City School District has chosen to primarily use the NY Dept of Ed (state made) Engage NY "Modules". Other schools (such as St. Mary's) use their own school made lesson plans and curriculum to meet these same standards.
Common Core News - National & Local
National - The five states that never agreed to adopt the Common Core standards are: Texas, Nebraska, Alaska, Virginia and Minnesota (accepted ELA only). These states chose to use their own state standards. Many states have started legislative action to repeal Common Core (Indiana, South Carolina, Ohio, Kentucky, Oklahoma, New York and others).
Local - In New York State, 36 districts (in the Rockland & Westchester Counties) have pulled out of Common Core altogether and have a pending lawsuit against the State regarding the Data Collection aspect of Common Core which requires schools to provide student data to InBloom (a data collection company funded by Bill and Melinda Gates). Their concerns are privacy and need for collection. This delayed the data collection aspect of Common Core until April for all NY schools. Closer to home, due to parent and teacher concerns, Corning, Horseheads and Painted Post school districts have agreed to NOT USE the state provided curriculum/lessons from Engage NY. NY (as a state) recognizing need to slow down the implementation of cc. More info here. See Teacher Union stance on common core here.
