Jan 14, 2013 Canandaigua Connected ENewsletter

So, my son was quizzing us on Martin Luther King/the civil rights movement and I got the Rosa Parks question. I remembered she refused to give up her seat on the black section of the bus when the white section filled up.  She was arrested for disorderly conduct, BUT she sparked the end of the segregation laws in the South and was a pivotal symbol of the civil rights movement. One of the greatest things about our country is that when people feel so strongly about something, they can take a stand or stand up and say something.  What would happen if Rosa Parks chose to fall in line and not take a firm position on what she knew in her heart was wrong? Was she concerned what others would think? I don't think so.  I'm proud that we as a country have come so far to where we are now and can look back and thank those who showed us the light.  It takes people with sometimes opposing views from "the norm" to speak up so others can realize that maybe the norm can be improved upon.  We have Monday off as a national holiday to celebrate Martin Luther King Day, so let's bring this part of it home to our children.  Our history shows that questioning the parts improves the whole!
