e-Network News - December 2014
Thank you, Adopt A Family donors!
To our donors,

CHN and all the participants want to thank you for opening your hearts and making this holiday year meaningful to our Adopt A Family participants. Being a donor not only provides gifts for the holidays but also provides hope and acknowledgement to those that have had nothing.

This year, with your help, we were able to adopt more than 750 individuals!

This month I'd like to introduce you to Morene Rehbine, our director of Finance and Accounting.

The end of the year is a good time to introduce you to Morene, since it's the time of year many are looking to make year-end donations to nonprofit organizations. Financial advisors on many news shows and in newsletters suggest this as a way to help with taxes. Please know, we will put every dollar donated to good use! Morene will ably handle all our donations, just as she does the rest of the finances through the year. (We have made it easy to make a year-end donation though
 this link on our website.)

Morene works behind the scenes of Community Housing Network dealing with numbers and making sure financial statements are accurate and reliable.

However, Morene says it's not just about the numbers; it's about how the information is presented. In order for grants to be successful, all numbers must be accurate and easy to understand and Morene makes sure they are. Also, everything needs to be divided and booked correctly by various grants and departments. This ensures everyone such as donors, auditors, the board and the finance committee are confident when looking at the information. Everything should successfully reflect exactly what is happening within the organization.

Elizabeth Ireland, our grant and program analyst, says because of our practices, CHN has gained a reputation as a reliable organization. Morene's work makes it easy to provide backup documentation and other things a granter may require.

Providing reports at the end of a funding period requires a lot of documentation and CHN is always conscious about making these documents easy to navigate for funders. Elizabeth explains that CHN has received positive feedback in the past about how the simplicity and organization of these documents is appreciated.

Although Morene's day always consists of accounting, every day is different for her; depending on what is happening and who she is dealing with. Budgeting and managing different entities and styles of housing is what makes each day different. Since working at CHN, she gained a whole new outlook on the variety of housing issues and opportunities.

Morene also works directly with CHN's directors to help manage their budgets. Each director is responsible for

managing their own budget; however she has monthly meetings with them in case they have any questions.

Let's turn to Morene now and give her a chance to answer a few questions.

Morene Rehbine loves numbers!

How did you become involved with CHN?

Well, I became involved with CHN when there were only three people. I came in as an outside contractor assigned to the CHN account and was later hired. It's exciting to see the transition from when the organization first started. It started out with three people and now there are more than 80 people working here. The company keeps growing, maintaining the same vision, and helping so many more each year.

What kind of training is necessary for this job?

I have a bachelor's degree in accounting. I also worked in bookkeeping, payroll and other places which taught me a lot. All this practice gave me a good understanding of the job I do now and made it easier.

How do you keep your job exciting working with numbers all day?

I actually love numbers! Other than that, the people here make it exciting. I like the job I do.

What makes working for CHN worth it?

Working with such passionate people really makes it worth it. It truly is one of the best places I have ever worked. Everything is positive and everyone is always willing to volunteer and help with anything that comes their way. Events such as Adopt a Family truly have an impact on truly have an impact on me. The reaction from the people receiving gifts is really heartwarming.

Any parting words of wisdom?

"Everything is awesome when you're part of a team."
(Quote from "The Lego Movie")

I am grateful for Morene's work, as well as for the work of all CHN team members.

Thank you for your ongoing support!
