Homeless grandmother secures housing

Argola Windham, a grandmother of 15, was homeless when she first contacted Community Housing Network a little more than a year ago. With the help of CHN's Housing Resource Center specialist Linda Poloni, Argola was able to find a spot in a shelter and began working on a plan to secure housing.

With the help of a friend, she was able to get a job as a live-in caterer at a senior living facility. Word soon reached Argola that her mother had become ill. She left the job and moved in with her mother to care for her during her last months.

Argola had maintained contact with Linda throughout all the intervening months and had learned about the Section 8 housing programs. She was thrilled when she qualified and was able to get into the program, which meant she was able to get into subsidized housing for low-income residents.

Today, Argola and her grandson live in a clean, safe apartment in Ferndale. She says she knows she has come a long way from being homeless and has now set two goals for her future: "A condominium of our own" and "going back to school."

Message from Marc

Dear Supporter

MarcHappy Thanksgiving! Here at CHN, we are thankful for many things.

We are thankful for another successful fundraising event, Raise the Roof for Affordable Housing. Thank you to the sponsors and donors who made our event possible. Read more here.

We are also thankful for people such as Jim Clary, a marine artist, who is offering a way to help fellow veterans beginning in this month that contains Veterans Day and Thanksgiving. Read more here.

Another reason we're thankful is that CHN has been named one of Crain's Cool Places to Work as well as one of the Detroit Free Press Top 100 Workplaces 2012. Read more here.

"Thank you, thank you" is something we hear from grateful Adopt A Family recipients each year. There's still time to be involved this year.

So many reasons to be thankful!

Sincerely,

President

JimClaryJim Clary offers art donations to help fellow veterans

Jim Clary, marine artist and veteran, is combining his passion for maritime art and his dedication to helping fellow veterans. Jim is donating a limited number of collector prints on a first-come basis to people making a contribution to Community Housing Network's veteran housing services.

As the nation also remembers the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic, Jim's stunningly detailed piece "Nearer To Thee" (8"x8" print) willl be offered for donations of $25 or more. "In memory of the 100th Anniversary R.M.S. Titanic, April 15, 1912" (20"x17" print) will be offered for donations of $100 or more.

Contributions may be made on the CHN donation page on our secure website. Please choose Veteran Housing Services from the  dropdown button.

CoolPlacesCHN is a Cool Place and a Top 100 Workplace!

Crain's Detroit Business honored Community Housing Network by naming it one of the Cool Places to Work. Here's a 2-minute video we put together with team members saying why they think it's cool to work here. We were also honored to be named one of the Detroit Free Press Top 100 Workplaces 2012.

"We appreciate the commitment of the entire team, the exceptional leadership and our volunteer board of directors that all helped make both of these awards possible for the first time in our 12 years of existence," said Marc Craig, CHN's president. "We have a great culture here that allows folks to be as great as they really are."
