ENID SUMMER ACHIEVER'S PROGRAM

We have attended career fairs at college campuses across Northwest Oklahoma, Edmond, Stillwater, Norman and will be headed to Tulsa soon. We have represented 10 employers with 15 internships this summer.  Being able to offer FREE housing, FREE utilities, FREE internet and FREE cable has made ESAP very attractive to the students applying for these positions. One student from NWOSU-Alva said it best, "Props to Enid for having a program like this!  I want to live in Enid this summer!"

ENID DOWNTOWN GRANT

The 2013 Enid Downtown Grant winners were thrilled to share how the grant money they received was used in their businesses.  Vicki with Downtown Threads and Gina with One Page at a Time have made some positive changes in part to the grant money and their hard work.

The applications for 2014 are due April 4th at 5pm.  The eligibility requirements for the grant are listed here.

I do 100 push-ups every morning.

I'm not bragging...because that's all I do in the way of exercise.  I don't run, I don't lift weights, and I don't do pilates.  I just do push-ups.  It impresses me when I hear how some folks work out every day and can walk across the living room to get the TV remote without getting short of breath.  That's not me...I only do push-ups.  100 of them.

I started this regimen about a year ago.  The first day I tried it I did 20 push-ups and was sore for three days afterward.  Slowly I worked up to 50 and then to 60 and figured there was no way I could ever do more.  About three weeks ago I reached 100 for the first time.  This is a level I never thought possible, but to be honest with you, I have now reached a point where I can't even imagine a time when 20 was all I could do.  It seems like a lifetime ago and is a level I never plan to return to either.

I relate this to Enid today.

A few weeks ago, Darius Rucker held a concert in Enid.  I never thought we would reach a level in town where Hootie would be here in the flesh and performing.  Then we got the word last week that Reba McEntire will be here in June.  Our level of expectation is continuing to rise...which is a good thing.

We can no longer expect "B" level talent.

We can no longer expect corner nodes in downtown that aren't beautiful.

We can no longer expect limited shopping options.

We can no longer expect a "typical" HS baseball stadium and basketball arena.

We can no longer expect dilapidated school facilities.

We can no longer expect center medians that don't have beautiful crepe myrtles blooming in them.

We can no longer expect to be a community without a direction and a unified marketing front.

We've seen what we are capable of, and just like an athlete, our expectations for performance should continue to rise.

In the past few weeks, we have had the engineers in Enid for the billion dollar Koch Nitrogen Plant expansion discussing their construction timeline and permitting process which is still going according to plan.  We have had the leadership team in town from the Northstar AgriIndustries canola processing plant finalizing their construction timeline for later this year as well.  We had the official announcement this week on the power purchase agreement for the new 100 MW wind farm east of Enid which will allow construction to move along more quickly.  And we are seeing two new housing developments moving dirt on Oakwood and on Cleveland.  Growth is coming, and we should expect nothing less.

My expectation for myself and my community are reaching new levels every month.  I'm starting to think I can do 200 pushups.....I wonder what level Enid will reach?

WIND INDUSTRY INVESTS $6 BILLION
Wind Turbine Under pressure from a proposed legislative moratorium on developments covering half of Oklahoma, members of the wind industry released a study Wednesday touting the economic benefits of wind energy.  The study, by economists Kyle Dean and Russell Evans of the Economic Impact Group LLC, found wind developers invested about $6.1 billion in Oklahoma projects from 2003 to 2012. The study said 26 wind farms built in the state during that decade led to 1,600 direct jobs, with another 4,000 jobs created from manufacturing and related support industries.  Dean said Oklahoma wind farms provide an additional $43 million a year in property tax revenue and pay an estimated $22 million annually in landowner royalties.  Read more...
TRADEWIND ENERGY ANNOUNCES AGREEMENT

One of the largest independent wind and solar project development companies in the U.S., TradeWind Energy, Inc. announced it has entered into long-term renewable energy purchase agreements with the Grand River Dam Authority to deliver low-cost wind energy from two Oklahoma wind projects.

The 136 MegaWatt Mustang Run project in Osage County and the 98 MegaWatt Breckinridge project near Enid will together produce enough low-cost energy to supply about 65,000 Oklahoma homes. The projects will pay approximately $50 million to TradeWind's landowner partners and generate in excess of $30 million in total ad valorem property taxes, over the next 20 years. According to the announcement, the projects will create approximately 20 full-time jobs once they are both operational and will require 300 construction jobs to build.  Read more...

FIRST STEP IN WATER PLAN
raindrops-umbrella.jpg Enid Regional Development Alliance has released the framework and mission statement for a months-long study that will set the region's water agenda.  Called the Northwest Oklahoma Water Action Plan, the study hopes to come up with a strategy for efficient management of water resources.  "Our purpose is to put together a plan that municipalities and industry can follow for long-term, sustained water supply in northwest Oklahoma," Executive Director Brent Kisling said. ERDA paid $20,000 for a government relations firm to organize the mission plan and scope of work. Read more...
GROENDYKE TRANSPORT RECOGNIZED
18_wheeler.jpg

CivilianJobs.com, where America's veterans connect with civilian careers, announced the finalists for the "Most Valuable Employers (MVE) for Military" today. Marking the sixth year of its publication in 2014, the MVE recognition serves to help veterans identify the top employers to target for civilian careers. Greg Hodgen, president of Groendyke Transport, said, "Due to the nature of our business, Groendyke has enjoyed a very prosperous and successful relationship with our Nation's returning veterans. These individuals are trained to think on their feet, keep their composure under stress, and are natural leaders among our workforce. All these qualities make them a great fit for Groendyke, and for the tank truck industry. Read more...

HAPPY FOR HOMES
blue-doorknocker.jpg If you report it, they will build.  We've reported repeatedly about Enid's lack of housing being a "choke point." Last July, a study confirmed our desperation for new housing options. "We knew if we could quantify our demand in Enid that developers and builders from around the region would be interested," said Brent Kisling, executive director of the Enid Regional Development Alliance. Slowly, but surely, new housing developments for Enid are being introduced to break the bottleneck. Read more...
XPRESS WELLNESS FIRST OKLAHOMA LOCATION OPENS IN ENID
pills3.jpg A new urgent-care clinic opens today in Enid.  Xpress Wellness, located at 220 S. Van Buren, is the company's first location to open. In three weeks, a second location opens in Elk City. Chief Medical Officer Dr. Scott Williams said he plans on opening another five in Oklahoma by the end of this year. Those locations will be announced later this month, he said. "The rate that our population is growing, and the rate we're putting out primary care providers, it will only get worse and worse," Williams said. "This really just fills a niche."  Read more...
AUTRY CONTINUES TO HIT IT OUT OF THE PARK
Autry Technology Ctr. Legendary Detroit Tigers' star Ty Cobb has the highest career batting average ever recorded by a major league baseball player, .366. That means, however, Cobb was successful in getting a hit in only 36.6 percent of the times he went to bat. Autry Technology Center puts the Georgia Peach to shame, with a .960 average. Ninety six percent of those who complete a program at Autry Tech either find a job in their field, go on to further their education or join the military. Autry offers 25 full-time day programs in fields ranging from construction to nursing and technology to public safety. The school's enrollment usually dips when the local unemployment rate falls, said Autry Tech Superintendent James Strate, but that hasn't been the case lately. Enid's unemployment rate is only 3.4 percent, but Autry's enrollment has risen this year.  Read more...
ENID PUBLIC SCHOOLS A TRENDSETTER
Enid Public Schools During the last year, University Center at Enid High School opened its doors, providing the opportunity for high school students to take college-level classes and earn college credit. The 20-classroom building on the northeast corner of the EHS campus is home to advanced placement and dual-credit classes. Partnerships with Northern Oklahoma College, Autry Technology Center and the College Board make it possible for students to earn enough higher education credit to enter college as sophomores when they leave high school.  Read more...
