Welcome to
The Morning Star Update!

Spring has finally arrived and the garden is about ready to start bursting with color. A few irises have already opened, but there are dozes and dozens of buds that will be opening over the next few days and more to come over about the next month. When I was out walking around the garden this morning, I noticed that a few of the rose bushes have nice fat buds on them too. I can hardly wait to see roses in the garden again! I hope that I am not jinxing myself, but it looks like the garden should be beautiful for Mother's Day and K-State Graduation!

One of my favorite ways to enjoy the combination of chocolate and Bourbon! Here's the recipe.

Time to Prune the Sand Cherries

Our four Sand Cherries trees have just finished blooming, which means that it is time to prune them. (Spring-blooming trees and bushes should be pruned after blooming. Summer-bloomers should be pruned in early spring.) I used to prune ours like taller trees, trimming off all of the lower branches and letting the top be full and heavy; that is, until I realized that style of shaping allowed storms to catch the tops of the delicate trees and really cause damage to them. Now I just cut off the very lowest of the limbs and shape the rest of the tree into a shorter, roundish, bushy shape. They are still quite lovely and suffer less storm damage. (Shown at top of page, before pruning.) I'll get out this weekend to cut off all of the straggly bits and make the trees more compact. People almost react with surprise when I tell them that pruning small trees is one of my favorite gardening chores; I love the way that it combines problem solving with artistry.
Thank you for reading The Morning Star Update! I look forward to hearing from - or seeing you - soon.

Happy May!

Sincerely,

Laurie Pieper

The Art of The Steal
The Art of The Steal is a gripping, tense documentary about the fate of the Barnes Foundation - home to arguably the world's greatest collection late 19th century and early 20th century art. Dr. Albert Barnes, grew up in poverty, put himself through medical school, and earned a fortune right before the Great Depression. At a time when most Americans and Europeans were down and out on their luck, Barnes was collecting impressionist and post-impressionist paintings: Renoirs, Cezannes, Matisses, etc., for the sake of enjoying art. After his surprise death in 1951 - despite the specific terms of his will and trust - the collection was subject to a corporate take-over and  moved to Philadelphia. The Art of The Steal, though somewhat one-sided, compellingly examines Barnes' life, the terms of his trust, and the takeover of his 25 billion dollar art collection.
