Welcome to
The Morning Star Update!

As I look out my office window and see gray in the sky and snow on the ground, it is difficult to "Think Spring." Yet, that is just what I am going to do! Spring is officially just around the corner, the Vernal Equinox being on March 20th.  And K-State Spring Break is also this month, March 14th - 22nd. So I decided to exercise a little wishful thinking and feature a springtime photo of the B&B and start writing about springy things. I'm sure you understand and will forgive me for getting a little ahead of myself and of Mother Nature! It's been a crazy winter for the B&B between flu season and winter weather travel mix-ups. So, who can blame me? Yeah, Spring, we're ready!
Orange Chocolate Chip Donuts

These cakey donuts are delicious served warm with coffee, hot chocolate or a big glass of milk! For a bit, in the dessert department, I think it seemed like I was stuck on chocolate and cherries. Oh, how I have moved on  ... to chocolate and orange for breakfast! This recipe can even be made gluten-free, with no one the wiser. I've made it here with a thin orange-cinnamon-honey glaze then sprinkled with cinnamon sugar. But feel free to substitute an orange or chocolate glaze, if your taste buds so desire. Yum, yum, whatever way!

What to Do About Garden Roses

I realize that as folks on the East Coast read this, they are going to be thinking, "whine, whine, whine!" But really, it has been a strange winter here. No, not like back east has had - but strange, nevertheless. Winter seemed to come early and hard, then get really warm - even warmer here than in Las Vegas at one point in January. Then cold, then warm - cold and warm to what seems like greater extremes than normal.
As a result, the garden is really confused - especially the roses. Even though we are currently having weather in the teens, the canes on my roses have almost all turned green which means that they are starting to come out of dormancy. On unusually warm winter days, I always wish that I could tell them, "No, don't wake up. It is too early, my pretties. We could get snow in May!" But really, all one can do is be patient and hope for the best.
The thing not to do is get overly anxious and prune roses back too early. For if prolonged freezing temperatures come after they have been pruned, they will die back even further causing them to struggle too much putting on extra new growth when it is time - if they have the energy to come back at all. Last season's roses were not their very best for just this reason.
During years when we are having lovely, hot temperatures over Spring Break, and I am outside cleaning up the garden, it is hard for me to resist the temptation to prune the roses. The garden always looks so much cleaner once that chore is done and it really makes me feel like the garden could burst into bloom at any moment. But I have learned my lesson the hard way! I usually try to wait until late April or even the first week in May to trim the rose bushes, unless they are starting to put on leaves. You don't want to let them leaf out and then cut off all their hard work and energy spent. So really, there is no set date for pruning roses - but in Manhattan, Kansas, March is too early. That is ... maybe ... unless it is a crazy year.
Thank you for reading The Morning Star Update! I look forward to hearing from - or seeing you - soon.

Happy March! Have a safe Spring Break!

Sincerely,

Laurie Pieper

Quartet

Quartet, directed by Dustin Hoffman and featuring an all-star cast led by Dame Maggie Smith, is a wonderfully entertaining film about four famed opera singers living in a home for retired musicians. With so much in common, what could go wrong, right?
Unlike many movies in which the elderly are treated as doddering fools for comic relief, the characters in Quartet have interesting stories that are not yet over. (The movie reminds me of The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel in that way.)
Oh, and this movie has beautiful music. The main characters are played by actors, but the other characters are all played by singers and musicians.
Do you have any book or movie recommendations to share? I always love hearing about them.

Over Spring Break
So if one isn't heading way down south to the beaches or out west to the mountains, what can one do for Spring Break, that is besides start spring cleaning? Well, of course, we are all hoping for sunny spring weather that week. But rain or shine, Manhattan has plenty to offer: art (Strecker-Nelson Gallery, Beach Museum, Manhattan Arts Center); history & nature (Flint Hills Disovery Center, Riley County Historic Museum, Sunset Zoo, K-State Insect Zoo); dining (so many great choices!); movies; shopping. Oh, yes, and a staycation at The Morning Star.
What are you going to be doing? Manhattan is usually pretty quiet over Spring Break, so you'll feel like all of these things are just waiting for you! If you have any fun ideas, let me know. I'd love to post them on our Facebook page.
