Happy New Year
Welcome to
The Morning Star Update!

I hope that you had a fabulous December - and that January 1st has your new year off to a wonderful start! The above photo is one that I took on the Konza Prairie on New Year's Day a few years ago. Though we don't currently have snow on the ground, we have had some lengthy stretches of snow and cold over the past few months, tempting me to start thinking of springtime. Whoa, I guess I had better slow things down! In the meantime, I hope that you enjoy this January edition of The Morning Star Update! Wishing you a marvelous 2015! Cheers!
Sgroppino

Sgroppino is a crisp, bubbly Italian drink, made with Prosecco, that can be served before or after dinner, or between courses, or even as a dessert. We enjoyed them on Christmas Day and on New Year's Eve - and I made them with my Limoncello Sorbet recipe that some of you might have tried. Though the holidays are about over, that is no reason why you can't serve Sgroppini at your next dinner party! Here's the recipe along with one for a sparkling mocktail. Salute!

Orange Carrot Soup

This is a dish that I served as a starter for Christmas dinner ... and it was so well received that I decided to make it again for New Year's Day! It is full of flavor, but not very heavy. Here is the recipe. Enjoy!
Thank you for reading The Morning Star Update! I look forward to hearing from - or seeing you - soon.

Happy 2015!

Sincerely,

Laurie Pieper

Congratulations!
Congratulations to Alex and Emmalie ... and thank you for choosing The Morning Star for your wedding! May you be tremendously happy together!
House Plants for Winter
In general, I'm much more of an outdoor gardener than an indoor one. Some people can keep house plants going in every room all year around. I'm not one of those people, however, I do love to have flowering plants indoors during the winter months. My two favorites are orchids and roses. Both are beautiful, of course, but I also appreciate them for different reasons - orchids for their long bloom time and roses because I can transplant them to the garden once the outdoor temperatures are reliably warm. Do you have favorites?
Good Luck in the Alamo Bowl!
The Kansas State Wildcats meet the UCLA Bruins in the Alamo Bowl tomorrow. We'll be home in Kansas, cheering them on - probably while eating leftover Orange Carrot Soup with sandwiches! Go Cats!
