Welcome to
The Morning Star Update!

|
It was a glorious October here in Manhattan, Kansas - fully of sunny warm days and beautiful autumn foliage. If it weren't for the falling leaves, and for the burst of cold weather that descended upon us for Halloween, it would be hard to believe that November is upon us and with it, the time to start getting ready for holiday season. May your holidays be replete with joyful times that will turn into happy memories!

Thankful for Family & Friends
Around the holidays, people like to give thanks for their loved ones. We are blessed with many family and friends for whom we are always grateful and especially so when we take time to reflect during this season of giving thanks. This year, we have a new family member that we are delighted to have welcomed into our lives. We recently adopted Willow (right) so that Penny (left) could have a "sister" once again. Willow is a four year old red Boston Terrier and a real sweetheart who almost instantly felt like she was a part of our family. From our household to yours, we hope that you have a wonderful Thanksgiving with your heart full of love and your belly full of yummy food!

Chocolate Bourbon Pots de Creme with Orange Bourbon Cherries
This is a wonderful recipe to keep in mind for the holidays when one has so much to do to get ready for company. It only takes 15 minutes to make (plus chilling time) and is decadently rich. I make the dense custard with Ghirardelli Intense Dark Twilight Delight Chocolate (72% cacoa) and Woodford Reserve Bourbon. Enjoy! View the recipe.

Pear Drop Cookies with Lemon Icing
There are so many wonderful cookie recipes out there, but this is one that I love for autumn. Made with fresh pears, spices, oats ... and topped with Lemon Icing when I want to make them a little fancier. View the recipe. Enjoy!

Autumn Mocktail
|
Around the holidays, it is important to remember that not everyone drinks alcohol and to offer beverage selections that that don't make your non-drinking guests feel excluded from the festivities. This is one of my favorite mocktails for autumn. View recipe.

Foyle's War
|
Melissa and Curtis - return guests from the KC area - have gotten me hooked on a British television show (available on Netflix) called Foyle's War. Set in England during WWII, the show is about a British detective whose investigations seem to always lead him into a world of morally complex issues. The show is quiet and thoughtful. In addition to featuring astute sleuthing, the series provides interesting social history about life during wartime and serves as a good reminder that we have so much to be thankful for. Thanks for the recommendation, Melissa and Curtis!

... from an Autumn Wedding
|
We had a beautiful garden wedding here a few weeks ago ... with perfect weather, by the way. Congratulations to Kristine and Anthony! Here are some of the lovely flowers from the bride's bouquet of roses, anemones, dusty miller, mums, and dried seed pods. We happily do weddings all year 'round!
