October 2014
Welcome to
The Morning Star Update!

I took the photo above a few days ago when we were having glorious autumn weather here in Manhattan, Kansas - sunny days, high temperatures in the 80's and lows most nights in the 50's. What a difference a few days can make. Now we're having highs in the 50's, lows in the 30's and quite a bit of rain ... and a respite from having to water the garden. Beautiful weather is supposed to return next week, though, just in time for a lovely garden wedding! With all of the fall perennials in bloom, we have lots of butterflies around and they are always so beautiful to see. I wonder where they hide on rainy days. A brief sidenote .... football season is underway, so we are meeting lots of new KSU parents as they come to town to go to games with their kids. We hope that your autumn is off to a great start as well!
Last October
Last year, it snowed on  October 18th. It was pretty exciting to see, knowing that the snow wasn't going to stick around. Nevertheless, I wouldn't mind if it came a bit later this year! Meterologists are predicting an early, hard winter for the midwest this year. I'd be happy if they were wrong.

Pumpkin Dried Cherry Quick Bread

I love pumpkin breads. They are autumn's perfect comfort food. Here is one of my recipes. I make it in a decorative pan and serve it with a simple dusting of confectioner's sugar. Enjoy!
Her Fearful Symmetry
Written by Audrey Niffenegger, author of The Time Traveler's Wife, Her Fearful Symmetry would be a fun book to read around Halloween. Set in modern day London, the novel is about twin sisters who inherit a flat from their mother's twin, but the inheritance comes with strings attached: they must live in it for a year and their parents aren't allowed in it. The flat borders an historic cemetery, providing fodder for the twins' imaginations and setting the scene for events to come. (If you haven't already read The Time Traveler's Wife, that too would be a good book to read in October.) Do you have any book recommendations to pass along?
Have a great October and a Happy Halloween! Thank you for reading The Morning Star Update!

Sincerely,

Laurie Pieper

Purple from the Autumn Garden
Our Autumn Garden at The Morning Star is full of color, but especially purple. Here is a sampling of some of the purples from yard: fragrant phlox - which starts blooming usually in July; several shades of purple chrysanthemums; beauty berries, which started to turn purple a few weeks ago, Russian Sage, liriope, and Blue Mist Spirea. I could have cut some of our 'Royalty' Crape Myrtles and some of the last purple coneflowers for the photo, but why overdo it? (Sedum pictured top left. I think that the variety is 'Brilliant'.)
Autumn Comes to Manhattan
Manhattan can be quite beautiful in the autumn. Right now the leaves around town are just starting to turn with the temperatures beginning to get a bit nippy. In a few weeks, we should have a lot more color. It is a great time of year to walk around downtown, campus or Aggieville, or to head out to the prairie. What is your favorite thing about Manhattan in the autumn?
