Welcome to
The Morning Star Update!

Happy labor Day Weekend! Wow, it is hard to believe that the summer is almost over and that soon the holiday season will be upon us once again. Though, I always look forward to the holidays, it is amazing how time marches on. With all of the activities that take place in Manhattan at this time of year, it will seem as though in no time at all, I'll be writing about Thanksgiving. But in the meantime, let us enjoy late summer and early autumn: the weather, the gardens, back-to-school time, performing arts, books to read, and cultural, sporting and social events. That is a lot to enjoy! Have a great month!
Fresh Pineapple Cake

A light, not overly-sweet cake, with a course crumb, Fresh Pineapple Cake is delightful served for breakfast or afternoon tea. Here is the recipe. Enjoy!
Seafood Cobb Salad
A fun and fancy twist on the traditional Cobb Salad - the traditional one being  made with meats, eggs and blue cheese - this salad is crisp, refreshing and makes for a great summer supper served with fresh bread.  Here is the recipe. Enjoy!

The Ghost Map
by Steven Johnson

The Ghost Map: The Story of London's Most Terrifying Epidemic and How It Changed Science, Cities, and the Modern World
, by Steven Johnson, is the K-State Book Network selection for this year.  The entire university is expected to read the book to facillitate common discussion; and in addition, a number of events will be held on campus and in the Manhattan community to promote awareness of this excellent book. Previous selections include The Hunger Games, Zeitoun, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lachs, and Ready Player One.
The Ghost Map is about London's cholera epidemic of 1854 and how two men traced the epidemic to the water supply. This non-fiction book is both a work in history of science and a detective story of sorts. My book club read it shortly after it came out, and I found the book so fascinating that I passed it along to at least four other people. It also gave me an immense appreciation for good public sewers systems.  A word of advice, though, don't read this book while eating!

Have you read any great books recently that you would like to share?
Have a great September! Thank you for reading The Morning Star Update! Let me know if you have any recipes that you would like to share.

Sincerely,

Laurie Pieper

A Summer Wedding
I love working with wedding couples, especially really sweet ones like Labrina and Brandon, who had a beautiful wedding at the B&B last weekend. Best wishes to the newlyweds! For more pictures ...
Morning Clouds Over Manhattan
With the start of autumn just a few weeks away, summer days are getting shorter. This is a photo that I took recently around sunrise. (It is noticeable that sunrise is occurring a little later each morning.) I took this photo from the upper deck at the Flint Hills Discovery Center - an area where visitors can relax and take in the view anytime of day. The current exhibit at the Discovery Center is Ice Age Imperials, which runs through September 14th. So you still have a few weeks to see this wonderful exhibit. More photos ...
