June 2014
Welcome to
The Morning Star Update!

Welcome to the June edition of The Morning Star Update! May flew past, but was a happy month of graduation parties, weddings and wedding showers. We had a beautiful wedding at the B&B last weekend and I posted some photos on Morning Star Weddings so you can see the flowers and decorations. Summer seems to be officially underway, even if there are a few weeks left of spring. Recent graduates have loaded up their vehicles and moved away, schools are in summer session, the city pools are open, travelers are making car trips around the state, and wedding season is in full swing. I hope that you have plans for summer fun. Maybe we will get to see you at The Morning Star!

The Walt Longmire Mysteries
by Craig Johnson

In anticipation of  its new season - which starts June 2nd - I recently managed to catch up on all of the episodes of the A & E television series, Longmire. Having done so, I thought that this show and the books on which they are based, would be great recommendations for this month. The stories are set in fictional Absaroka County, Wyoming - though the show is filmed in New Mexico.  Featuring ranchers, developers, big business, and Cheyenne Indians living on a reservation, The Walt Longmire Mysteries are modern day westerns for fans of the mystery- crime genre. With suspenseful storylines,  intricate characters, and complex issues the stories/episodes have a lot to recommend them.
The central character, dry-witted Sheriff Walt Longmire (Robert Taylor), is a brooding yet spiritual lawman who, with the moral support of his adult daughter, Cady (Cassidy Freeman), is recovering from the death of his wife. Assisted by his life-long friend, bar owner Henry Standing Bear (Lou Diamond Phillips), and his deputies - Victoria Moretti (Katee Sackhoff), Branch Connally (Bailey Chase) and The Ferg (Adam Bartley) - Longmire struggles to uphold the law and yet follow his conscience in a world more complicated than that of the westerns of old, one in which the bad guys aren't always recognizable by their black hats. As the series develops, so do the characters, and it turns out that criminals aren't the only ones with secrets to hide.  If you get a chance to watch the show or read the books, I hope that you enjoy them!
Do you have any books, shows or movies to recommend?
Decadent Iced Coffee

Iced coffee is a wonderful treat for summer because it is cold and delicious; and it is easy to make. Just fill a glass with coffee ice cubes. Top with cold, good-quality, brewed coffee. Then add whipped cream and cinnamon sugar to make the drink a decadent experience.  Serve as a dessert or as an afternoon snack. Enjoy! More pictures are on my blog.
Do you have a favorite iced drink for summer or other summertime treat that you would like to share?

As always, thank you for reading The Morning Star Update! I'd love to hear from you. In the meantime, have a great June!

Sincerely,

Laurie Pieper

National Rose Month
June is a wonderful time for roses in the garden, and so of course, it is appropriate that it is National Rose Month. Our roses at The Morning Star got off to a late start these year, but have been loving the late spring weather. Here is a photo that I took yesterday of blooms on our Livin' Easy rose bush. Livin' Easy is an apricot to coral-colored floribunda that blooms from spring to mid-autumn. Its colors remind me of a brilliant sunset. It is a wonderfully cheerful garden specimen.
