Spring - it's trying to happen. We have had just enough warm weather that a few trees are starting to bud out and some spring-blooming shrubs are beginning to flower. The garden is about three weeks behind normal by my estimation, but green is starting to show and I even saw small buds on our lilac bush this morning. Soon things will really be happening out there. Have a wonderful April!

Rosé Sangria This is a light, dry sangria - perfect for serving with brunch or hors d'oeuvres.
1 to 1 1/4 bottles dry rosé wine* 1/4 - 1/2 c. orange liqueur
1 c. fresh strawberries, sliced 1/2 c. raspberries 1/2 pear, sliced 1/2 lime, sliced simple syrup, optional extra fruit for garnish Combine wine, liqueur, and fruits in a glass carafe. Chill for about six hours before serving. Taste. If desired, sweeten with simple syrup. Enjoy! Do you have a favorite sangria recipe? * As a general rule, the darker the color, the drier the rosé. Also, European rosés (for example, ones from France or Italy) tend to be drier than American ones.

Orphan Train
by Christina Baker Kline
Orphan Train by Christina Baker Kline was one of the book selections last month for the reading group to which I belong. (We always have at least 2 choices a month.) Everyone who read it, really liked this novel which is based on the social welfare program that relocated orphaned and unwanted children from Eastern cities to families, mostly in the rural Midwest. Approximately 250,000 children were sent on trains - sometimes in conditions not much better than those on cattle cars - which would stop off in towns where the children would be marched out for the locals to inspect. Kline tells the fictional story of Vivian Daly, a young Irish immigrant sent west from New York City in the hope of finding of family who would adopt her. Many such children found loving homes, but many also were treated as indentured servants or otherwise abused, separated from their siblings and with no one to turn to for help. Orphan Train is a depiction of hardships, but also of second chances and of coming to grips with one's life. After surviving and growing up, Daly returns east where later in life she is assisted by Molly Ayers, a teenager who herself has been in and out of foster care, enabling the two women to come to a mutual understanding of their lives. Do you have any books to recommend?

A Ladies' Tradition
|
When I was growing up, my mother, her best friend Dede, and I had a wonderful tradition. Every Palm Sunday, we would go out to the local plant nurseries and shop for flowers - usually azaleas, but sometimes Easter Lilies, and always, whatever we happened to fall in love with. It is something that we did every year until I moved away from home; and it is a tradition that I miss. Every year, the Sunday before Easter, I think of my mother and Dede. As families evolve, so do their traditions. I hope that you and your family have wonderful traditions by which you remember the holidays, whatever holidays you celebrate.
