Welcome to
The Morning Star Update!
|
Happy October! It is officially autumn and, accordingly, the nights are getting cooler. We are still having comfortable daytime temperatures, though, and the foliage has not yet started to turn. The garden has made its transition from summer to autumn bloomers, with about half of the fall perennials flowering already. It is truly a beautiful time of the year. Enjoy!

Maples
Something about autumn always makes me crave maple syrup. So I made a batch of Maples over the weekend. This is another recipe from my cookbook, Confectionately Yours! I also posted the recipe for these delicious cookies on atasteofmorning.com. Enjoy! A special bonus, I have Confectinately Yours on sale right now for $17.50 (regularly $23.99). You can order yours here.

Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier
Rebecca, by Daphne Du Maurier is one of my favorite books and I am not alone in liking it. First published in 1938, Rebecca, has never been out of print. In 1940, Alfred Hitchock made a movie out of it starring Laurence Olivier and Joan Fontaine, which by the way, also happens to be one of my favorite movies, even though the ending was changed to satisfy the movie studio. The book is named after Rebecca, the late and first wife of Max de Winter but is narrated by Max's second wife, whose name we never learn. The second Mrs. de Winter - our narrator - is convinced that her new husband is still in love with his late wife. Mystery and suspense ensue in this gothic romance. What have you been reading lately? Any good books to recommend?

Black-Flowering Moudry Grass Pennisetum alopecuroides 'Moudry' is one of my favorite perennials for autumn and this has been as especially good year for black-flowering Moudry grass. At only 2.5' tall by 1.5' wide this grass is relatively low-maintenance compared to some of the giant grasses. It should be cut back to the ground in late winter or spring before new shoots form and then watered regularly if conditions are dry. In mid-September it sends up soft, fluffy "blooms" that are a blackish-purple at the ends. The blooms attract birds and also add interest to the winter garden. I have read that this grass can be a nuisance, spreading easily if allowed to go to seed; however, I have not found that to be a problem. It has spread only minimally in the many years that I have had it in the garden and, in my experience, is not difficult to eradicate if it shows up someplace where it is not wanted. Still, if this is a concern, you might want to remove the fluff before it goes to seed.

Another Blog
|
Call me crazy, but I just started another blog, this one focused on nuptials. MorningStarWeddings.com will feature photos from ceremonies and receptions at The Morning Star as well as wedding planning tips and inspirations ... yes, and of course, lots of photos of flowers, cakes, and pretty things. To sign up to follow by email, go to the blog and click the follow button in the footer. It's a new blog, so I am still working out some of the details, but I think that it is going to be pretty fun.

Grace's Asian Fusion Café
|
In September, I was treated to something a little different. Grace, of the soon to open Grace's Asian Fusion Café in Aggieville, brought her new staff over to The Morning Star for a greet-and-meet and training session. Chef Danny prepared some of the dishes that they will be serving and boy, did they ever smell, look, and taste delicious. I'll be sure to update you on the opening in the November newsletter.
