Welcome to The Morning Star Update!
Greetings!

I had most of this newsletter written before Sandy hit the East Coast. So let me preface what follows by saying on behalf of everyone at The Morning Star that our thoughts go out to those affected by Hurricane Sandy and that we sincerely hope that the recovery process is as quick and painless as can be.
...
It will probably come as no surprise that I am thinking of this as the Thanksgiving issue of The Update. What may come as a surprise, however, is that thinking of a recipe for this issue has filled me with the memory of ruining last year's Thanksgiving dinner. We had 20 people over, and despite what was literally the most careful and detailed planning imaginable, our turkey was ready more than an hour early and everything snowballed from there. At least the desserts were fine ... and the company, thankfully, was wonderfully gracious. Still, if I hadn't had so many previous years of successful Thanksgiving dinners under my belt, I think that I might be afraid to ever cook a turkey again. I had special-ordered a fresh bird last year and my theory is that it was smaller than what I had ordered and had based my cooking time upon. Ah, the best laid plans ... . So here is wishing everyone a happy Thanksgiving that goes every bit as well as planned and hoped for!
Blood & Sand Cocktail
Blood and Sand

Blood & Sand, a classic cocktail from the 1930's and 40's, is named after a Rudolph Valentino film from 1922 in which the famed actor played a bullfighter whose career was ruined by fame, booze and the wrong woman (Rita Hayworth). This cocktail is heavy and fruity, but not overly sweet, and is one of the few cocktails made with Scotch. Blood & Sand is typically a caramel brown color, but can lean toward orange or red. It is one of our favorite cocktails for the holidays.

3/4 oz. Scotch

3/4 oz. Heering Cherry Liqueur or Grand Marnier Cherry Liqueur

3/4 oz. Sweet Vermouth, preferably Vya

3/4 oz. Fresh-squeezed  orange juice

Fill a cocktail shaker with crushed ice. Add ingredients. Shake well. Strain into a cocktail glass.

Notes: Cheap cherry brandies and vermouth can make this drink taste like cough syrup. Use good quality alcohol. Fresh-squeezed orange juice tends to have more of a tart taste than does bottled orange juice and so helps cut the sweetness of the vermouth and cherry liqueur. Fresh-squeezed blood orange juice can be substituted.

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel
The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel

At least four guests have recommended that Bill and I see The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. What a good recommendation! Starring Judy Densch, Maggie Smith, Dev Patel, Bill Nighy, Tom Wilkinson, and Penelope Wilton, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is about a group of British retirees lured to India by a young entrepeneur attempting to outsource retirement living. The supposedly newly refurbished luxury hotel in which they take up residence is not all that it was billed to be, but Jaipur, the hotel, the company of fellow guests and of young Sonny (Dev Patel) turn out to have their attractions nonetheless. If you enjoy watching movies around the holidays, you might consider The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. It is entertaining and also a nice film. Pass along your movie recommendations.
Below Stairs
Below Stairs by Margaret Powell

Below Stairs was one of my book club's selections for last month. I found the book engrossing and had difficulty putting it down. I think that I liked the book more than anyone else in the group, but I decided to recommend it anyhow.
Margaret Powell - born in Sussex, England in 1907 - grew up in poverty and like many young women of her era had few options for employment. At age 16, she became a kitchen maid - the lowest of servants in an English household. Below Stairs is Powell's memoir of working in domestic service. I think that it would appeal to anyone who has worked in a kitchen as well as to fans of Downton Abbey and Upstairs, Downstairs. Pass along your book recommendations.
Wishing you a most delightful Thanksgiving,

Crape Myrtle Foliage
Crape Myrtles for Autumn Color
I've written before about how beautiful Crape Myrtles are when in bloom; but they also produce beautiful autumn color in their foliage. This photo is of the "Tonto" Crape Myrtle in our front yard a few days ago. It has wonderful ruffled hot pink flowers in the summer and then leaves that go through gorgeous shades of orange and pinkish-red at this time of year.
