Mary Oak will read from and discuss her multifaceted memoir, Heart's Oratorio: One Woman's Journey through Love, Death and Modern Medicine (Goldenstone Press), on Wednesday, December 11 at East West Bookshop in Seattle (7:00 - 8:30pm). This memoir is a love story, heroine's journey and medical drama that explores the fragility and resilience of the human heart. A mother of four possible "carriers" of the same gene that resulted in her near-death, the author is challenged to reconcile a family heritage of natural healing with western medicine. Heart's Oratorio interweaves the mythic and personal realms as it asks: What is our right relationship, as modern humans, to the living earth, spirit and technology?

Austin Gary's new novel, The Queerling, is the story of Preston Nesbitt, a 16-year-old "memory prodigy" who is confined to a Portland, OR, mental hospital for denying participation in a viral YouTube video showing him being struck by a car that appears to pass through him. The Queerling was a short-list finalist in the 2012 Faulkner-Wisdom Literary Competition. It's now available in paperback and eBook from Amazon.com. Published by Deckle Press, Calgary, AB.

You know how hard it is to get good advice if you've ever faced an indifferent life guard when you complained of an octopus in the public pool; if you've ever accidentally sprayed your face with gold paint and were afraid of being mistaken for a false idol; or if your husband failed to notice that you'd replaced yourself with a manikin. These and other common problems are addressed in Dear Babalu: Letters to an Advice Columnist by Peter J. Manos, illustrated by Toby Liebowitz.

Sarah L. Blum had a successful book launch for
Women Under Fire: Abuse in the Military, at the Landmark on the Sound Event Center November 2. Both Pam Binder and Jason Black were featured speakers. The program included Sarah (nurse, Vietnam veteran, author) sharing her path to publication, Tawn Holstra (owner of Brown Sparrow Publishing) on the importance of the message rather than the book itself, and high-spirited music from part of the Total Experience Gospel Choir before Sarah read from her book and received a standing ovation. Visit www.womenunderfire.net to learn more and order the book.
