PNWA NEWS:

January Member Meeting and Workshop

Thursday, January 10, 2013 @ 7:00pm

Chinook Middle School's new TEMPORARY LOCATION
(@ Ringdall Junior High)
11650 SE 60th St.
Bellevue, WA 98006

Topic: Tackling the Monster: or, Writing a Synopsis
Speaker: Gerri Russell

Most authors hate writing a synopsis. It's hard to distill 100,000 words into one page. No matter how much we hate it, the reality is that the synopsis is the most important part of your submission package and, as such, it has to be developed and sweated over and polished with the same attention you devoted to the novel itself. Along with the cover letter, the synopsis is what sells the editor on your manuscript. If they don't see anything they like in the synopsis, they won't even glance at your chapter samples. Gerri Russell has tackled this monster many times and admits that she actually likes writing a synopsis. Learn Gerri's secrets for writing a selling synopsis that will help you sustain your writing career.

Winter Workshops

We have two fantastic workshops coming up at the Writers' Cottage, both of them taught by book doctor Jason Black:

Writing a Synopsis

Saturday, January 26, 2013

10:00am - 2:00pm
Speaker: Jason Black

Writers who are new to the world of noveling may be surprised to discover just how often they end up needing a synopsis of their manuscript. Whether it's for a query letter, an in-person pitch, a Kickstarter campaign write-up, a book description on Amazon or Goodreads, or even good old-fashioned back cover text, you'll end up using a synopsis more often than you can imagine. Given that, it pays to have a good one. This workshop will lead you through the ins and outs of boiling down a whole novel to less than a page of text, helping you to decide what to put in and -- more importantly -- what to leave out.

[This class will be $50 -- registration form coming soon.]

Chapter Polishing

Saturday, February 9, 2013

10:00am - 2:00pm
Speaker: Jason Black

Your story may be solid, but does each chapter do its part? Does each one serve its role in a way that pulls readers in, keeping them turning pages all the way through, and makes them eager to dive into the next? Or are your readers telling you that the structure is there, the story is good, but it isn't quite pulling them in? Just like gemstones, chapters need polishing if they're to grab anybody's attention. In this workshop, we'll look at several strategies for making your chapters -- and your story -- shine.

[This class will be $50 -- registration form coming soon.]

Both classes will take place at the PNWA Writers' Cottage in Gilman Village (317 NW Gilman Blvd, space #8, Issaquah, WA 98027).
