PNWA NEWS:

June Member Workshop and Meeting

Thursday, June 14, 2012 @ 7:00pm

Chinook Middle School

2001 98th Ave NE
Bellevue, WA 98004

Speaker:  Janna Cawrse Esarey
Topic: "Pitch Perfect"

"What's your book about?" It's the simplest question, but so tough to answer, especially without feeling clichéd or confusing. In this hands-on workshop, you'll learn how to convey the essence of your book in one simple paragraph.  For those pitching to agents and editors at the summer conference, we'll also discuss the elevator pitch, the extended pitch, and pitching etiquette.

PNWA member Wendy Hinman announces the release of her new book, Tightwads on the Loose: A Seven Year Pacific Odyssey. Tightwads on the Loose tells the story of Wendy and Garth, lured to sea by the promise of adventure. They buy a 31-foot boat that fits their budget better than it fits Garth's large frame and set sail for an open-ended voyage, never imagining they'd be gone seven years, or cover 34,000 miles at the pace of a fast walk. They live without most "necessities" and learn that teamwork and a sense of humor matter most as they face endless "character-building opportunities." "Alternately hilarious, exciting and thought-provoking, Tightwads on the Loose will take you on a glorious romp around the Pacific." The book is available now in paperback through Amazon and local independent bookstores. For more information, visit Wendy's website at www.wendyhinman.com.

---

PNWA member Mary Brockway announces the release of her fourth book in two years, Soaring Falcons, Falling Doves, which is out this month. It is a sequel to Of Dove and Falcon, which was published in March of 2012. Mary sends along this note: "All the years I have belonged to PNWA and other writing groups is finally paying off.  Don't be discouraged folks; some of us are lucky and some are just persistent!"

PNWA member Lucinda Wingard announces the publication of The Turn-around Bird, a version of which took 2nd place in the PNWA Literary Contest, YA Category, in 2008. It is the story of a modern African-American family hurled to the "end of the earth" -- Timbuktu -- in the fourteenth century. It's a time and place teeming with devious djinn and other wilderness spirits, griots and sorcerers, devout Muslim marabouts and fierce Tuareg generals. Above it all reigns Mansa Kankan Musa, emperor of Africa's legendary Golden Empire. Will he allow them to return to the twenty-first century with their heads still attached?

Plicata Press released the book in June 2012. The trade paperback is distributed by Ingram and available on Amazon. Please visit http://theturnaroundbird.com for details.

PNWA member Kathleen McFall announces the release of Blood and Whiskey (Pumpjack Press, May 2012), the second book in The Cowboy and Vampire Thriller Series (co-authored with Clark Hays). How far will Lizzie, a new Vampire with unique powers and a growing thirst for blood, and Tucker, a down-on-his-luck Wyoming cowboy facing his own mortality, go to protect their unlikely love? A tale of survival, loyalty and sacrifice in the modern west, Blood and Whiskey updates the vampire myth with a mix of evolution, religion and an overly-sensitive cow dog named Rex. Kirkus Reviews called it "riveting" with "strong writing, funny characters and plenty of action." Blood and Whiskey (trade paperback) is available at bookstores and online wholesale through Ingram Book Company (ISBN: 978-0-9838200-1-7) and as an e-book. For bonus materials, check out the authors' website www.cowboyandvampire.com and follow @cowboyvamp.

PNWA member Michael Camp announces a book launch party for Confessions of a Bible Thumper: My Homebrewed Quest for a Reasoned Faith, his first book, on Tuesday, June 19, 7:00pm at Silver City Brewery Taproom in Bremerton. Endorsed by Jessica Maxwell (Roll Around Heaven) as having "all the marks of a spiritual classic," renowned Jesus scholar Marcus Borg, and New York Times bestselling author Frank Schaeffer, Confessions is a brutally honest evolutionary spiritual journey with a clever craft beer theme. Its entertaining vignettes, accessible historical-biblical research, and disarming conclusions are sure to rattle the Religious Right and befuddle the Secular Left. On June 19 it will be available on Amazon and Barnes & Noble. Pre-order or purchase at http://www.michaelcampbooks.com.
