CLASSES/WORKSHOPS:

Speaking of Short Stories - This eight week workshop begins April 11th and is offered through Seattle Central Community College. Students will be listening to New Yorker fiction podcasts, generating new material, reading each other's work and giving feedback, as well as discussing how new technology changes the way we read and write. Each class will focus on a different aspect of craft; setting, character, voice, subtext, framing the story, etc. The last day of class, Chelsea will walk students through how to self-publish to Kindle and talk about the benefits and drawbacks of self-publishing. Instructor: PNWA member Chelsea Werner-Jatzke

Classes are on Wednesdays from 7:00-9:00 p.m.

---

Writing Short Stories from First Sentence to Submission - This is an intensive nine-session writing class. Each student is expected to write approximately 2,000 - 7,000 words a week and produce a portfolio of 2 - 5 short stories. During the first four weeks students plot short stories and write them to completion. The second half of the class is devoted to editing and revising one story from the student's portfolio. Students will learn to edit their own work and to receive and give constructive criticism. At the end of class, students submit their polished stories to literary or genre markets. Instructor: Lois Brandt

Classes are held Wednesdays evenings from 6:30-9:00 p.m. at Bellevue College's North Campus, and begin on April 18th.

Sail away for writing classes in the San Juan Islands this summer, or, better yet, in the Sea of Cortez, Mexico, next winter. PNWA member and author Penn Wallace will be teaching a series of writing classes on board the classic sailing vessel Victory. The Victory is a fifty-six foot yacht that has been recently upgraded to the standards of a modern luxury yacht. With a limit of six students per session, these classes are intimate and personal. Get all the attention you need and build life-long bonds with your fellow writers. Cruises will consist of a nightly class and homework to be prepared for the next night. Classes are five nights with the sixth night for socializing and relaxing. Go to Victory Charters' website or call (425) 775- 9273 for more details.

Write Award-Winning Fiction - In this workshop, participants will teach the fundamental elements of fiction through exercises that prevent your internal editor from seeping into your work. They will also discuss different methods of story structure and how employing structure can save you time during the revision process. You will learn to pinpoint deep character traits, develop strong scenes through the eyes of your narrator and build conflict so palpable that it will be difficult to tell if the story is fact or fiction. Whether you write novels, short stories, flash fiction or single scenes, you will develop story structure sure to grab your readers and keep them involved until the very final word. Instructors: PNWA members Susan Wingate and Terry Persun. The workshop will be held in Port Townsend at The Writers Workshoppe on Saturday and Sunday, April 21st and 22nd from 10:00 a.m.- 4:00pm.
