"Member Websites" Changes

As many of you are aware, we have a section of our website featuring short bios and web addresses of many PNWA members. In the next few weeks, we will be changing this to a simpler, more concise way to navigate the page information: your listing will be your Pen Name with a link to your website and/or blog. So if you are not yet listed on our "member websites" page, please send us your web address so we can include you in our directory: email us at pnwa@pnwa.org.

MEMBER NEWS:

PNWA member Judi Blaze announces the release of her short story collection, Normal People Are Those We Don't Know Well, from Black Rose Books. Most people have a fascination with reading about the lives of others-especially quirky, often unhinged individuals who live in a world of their own. The stories in Normal People Are Those We Don't Know Well allow the reader to see how peculiar others can be, and how we are not so different.

The stories chronicle the lives of quirky, often unhinged characters which show us that despite how peculiar we think others may be, they really are not so different; some involve love and loss, while others are humorous, poignant and endearing. The book is available through Amazon and Black Rose Books.

PNWA member Julia Detering (aka JD Rader) has released a promo for her novel Breaking News: A Novel.  Co-written with network news producer Michael Gudgell, Breaking News takes the reader behind the scenes of television news.  ABS News producer Bill Ramey becomes a player in a media frenzy surrounding Senator Gerald Smith and a missing blonde. Nothing is as it appears, and soon Bill uncovers dark secrets that someone would kill to protect. As the news story unfolds, Bill and Senator Smith are swept into the funnel of a media tornado that neither of them can control. Though Bill tries to hang on to his integrity, he becomes one of the players in a dangerous game of media manipulation.  Check out the promo here. Learn more at www.woodedislepress.com.

PNWA member Judith Kirscht announces the publication of her first novel, Nowhere Else To Go. As the racial and civil upheaval following the assassination of Martin Luther King tear apart the Midwestern college town of Norton Bluffs, white principal Cassie Daniels' junior high becomes a battleground for suburban fear, university idealism, and black anger. Shaped by the integrated backwater where she grew up, Cassie must fight not only the racial and class attitudes that split her faculty, but also the idealism of her own husband in order to defend the children from that same neighborhood, whose adolescence is being consumed by the conflict.

The original version of this novel won a Hopwood Award at the University of Michigan. The book is available on Amazon and the Florida Academic Press websites and in local bookstores in Stanwood, Anacortes, and Mount Vernon area.

PNWA member Penn Wallace announces that his first book, Blue Water & Me, will be published by Aberdeen Bay Press in the spring of 2012.

Blue Water & Me is a high-adventure true story of author Penn Wallace's magical first summer fishing with his father, Blue Water Charlie, at age eleven. The pair begin their adventure by ramming a thirty-thousand ton Japanese freighter. Licking their wounds, they cruise the coast of Mexico. Charlie regales Penn with old-time fish stories. Penn learns the story of how Charlie became a fisherman, with a little help from Bogey and the Duke. Penn hears about the death of the albacore industry, the political maneuvering and murder that followed in its wake. Penn swims with dolphins and explores desert islands. As the summer passes, Penn's undying belief in Papa's ability to handle any situation slowly erodes as he sees his father's feet of clay for the first time. Finally, they get caught in an out of season hurricane. They fight for their lives in hundred mile an hour winds and thirty foot waves.

Blue Water & Me is a story of father-son bonding that every father and son, and anyone who knows a father or son, should read. It should be on the bookshelves in time for Father's Day and will make an incredible Father's Day gift. http://pennwallace.com

PNWA member Jo Marshall's exciting press release about her Twig Stories series is now up at WebWire's site:

Researchers, wildlife experts, and educators across North America recommend a new book series called Twig Stories. Presented as "a journey into climate crisis," the novels attract young, disaffected gamers and junior scientists alike. Set in the Pacific Northwest, stick creatures called Twigs battle a changing climate wreaking havoc on their old growth forest. Dr. Diana Six, an ecosystems professor with the University of Montana, emphasizes the series' influence: "As a child, it was just such books that helped instill within me a desire to understand nature, and ultimately, to work in conservation."

Read the full press release here, and learn more about the series at www.twigstories.com.

PNWA member Kathy Dunnehoff announces the release of her novel, Plan On It (A Romantic Comedy), a past winner of the Zola Award in PNWA's annual literary contest. Plan On It is available through Amazon an e-book. Visit Kathy at www.kathydunnehoff.com.

CLASSES/WORKSHOPS:

2012 Author-Editor Clinic: call for manuscripts

Will 2012 be the year to get your novel, memoir, or nonfiction manuscript in shape? The Seattle-based Author-Editor Clinic has been helping authors revise and polish their books-in-progress since 2004. One reasonable rate for a complete read and thorough editorial critique. The Spring 2012 Clinic session begins February 20 (manuscript submissions due February 8). See our website at www.authoreditorclinic.com or contact administrator Kyra Freestar for a FAQ and further details (info@authoreditorclinic.com, 206-300-2601).

"I would recommend Barbara Sjoholm's editing clinic to any writer at any stage in his or her career. I was very pleased with the insightful, thorough critiques I received on a how-to writing text and an adventure novel. The quality of the development editing was high and the price was very low-a great combination." -Nick O'Connell, writer for Outside, Gourmet, The New York Times; author of On Sacred Ground: The Spirit of Place in Pacific Northwest Literature
