MEMBER NEWS:

GORDON KIRKLAND (Past PNWA President)
Long awaited TV series starring Gordon Kirkland aired November 3.

It's been two years and sixty-one days since production wrapped on a very unusual TV series starring Gordon Kirkland and eleven other Canadian authors. The series will start to air Tuesday November 3 at 8:30 PM Eastern Standard Time (5:30 Pacific) on Canada's BookTelevision. The show will repeat at 9:30 AM, 2:30 PM and 8:30 PM Eastern (6:30 AM, 11:30 AM and 5:30 PM Pacific) on Wednesdays. The series will run for seven episodes. Check with you local cable operator to determine the correct channel for BookTelevision.

The twelve authors were locked inside a large bookstore in Edmonton, Alberta for 72 hours over the Labor Day long weekend in 2007. During that time, they were assigned the task of
completing a full novel, amid the distractions of store customers, sleepless nights, and an ever present camera crew filming their every move ranging from working on the computer to brushing
their teeth.

"It's a reality-TV series for writers," Kirkland said. "I saw that as a sort of poetic justice, because reality series have made life difficult for so many of my friends writing for television in the United States. Writers are rarely needed for those shows."

The series was delayed after the sale of BookTelevison to CTV.

"The cast had pretty much given up hope of seeing the series air," Kirkland added. "Rumors of it's resurrection started circulating in September, and final confirmation was received at noon on October 30th, just 4 days before the first episode is to air."

Gordon Kirkland has been called "one of North America's premier humorists." He was cited as one of the seven Book Industry Characters in America, by BookExpo-America. His work has
been honored by The Harry Chapin Archives in New York, and by the National Press Club in Washington, DC. Three of his five best-selling books have received Canada's Stephen Leacock
Award of Merit for Humour. A sixth book, focusing on the fun and foibles of trying to survive the holiday season will be launched on December 5, 2009. He has lectured at numerous colleges
and universities in the United States and Canada, and sits on the faculty of the Southern California Writers Conference.

The novel Kirkland wrote during the show is a dark comedy/mystery about two deputies in a small mid-Western sheriff's department searching for a serial killer.

Kirkland lives in Pitt Meadows, British Columbia with his wife, Diane. They have two adult sons, and are the adoptive parents of a cream-colored Labrador retriever.

ROBERT RAY announces his new book, out in February.

The Weekend Novelist Rewrites the Novel, a follow-up to the bestselling The Weekend Novelist will guide writers of all levels through the next phase in crafting their novel: the rewrite.

You've finished your first draft-congratulations! Think it's ready for publication?
Think again. The next stage is all about revising and reworking your manuscript - fine-tuning the plot, adding or improving subplots, and fleshing out characters; in short, addressing important structural issues that make or break a novel.

Robert J. Ray, who helped thousands of writers get from blank page to first draft in The Weekend Novelist, now guides the same audience through a series of seventeen weekend revision exercises designed to fit into any busy lifestyle, focusing on everything from rewriting scenes to developing sound flashbacks to refining characters' back stories. Throughout the book, Ray illustrates his lessons with examples from such great works of literature as Jane Eyre, Gorky Park, and The Great Gatsby, so that writers may more easily identify how and why a certain technique or structural element helps or hinders their own work.  Also included are checklists, timed exercises, plot diagrams, and charts-all aimed to get you rewriting and revising your draft with confidence.

Whether you're an amateur novelist, a seasoned writer who's hit a mental block, or a creative writing teacher looking for proven exercises for better instruction, The Weekend Novelist Rewrites the Novel provides the tools to transform first drafts into successful novels.

Robert J. Ray is the author of eight novels, including the acclaimed Matt Murdock Mystery series, and has also written several practical writing guides, including The Weekend Novelist and The Weekend Novelist Writes a Mystery. A resident of Seattle, he runs writing workshops and formerly taught writing for the University of Washington's Distance Learning Program.

MENTORS FOR EVERETT HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS
Everett Public Schools' senior projects are focused on pursuing a personal career ambition. During the self-directed project, student will design and execute projects which include interviewing, researching, and exercising skills within the chosen field.

After research and consultation with a mentor-someone with experience in their field-the students pursue the focused goals of their project. Once students complete their work, review their increasing skill levels with their mentors, and receive feedback, they present the end results of their project.

The mentor's role is to help students design their projects and evaluate their learning. This can be done electronically, by phone or in person. Mentors will be asked to complete school district volunteer paperwork, sign off on student proposals, and complete a final mentor feedback form.

Several of our students are interested in various areas of writing. Currently there are students at our alternative school interested in screenwriting and publishing a book of poetry. We have received help in the past from various writing networks including PNWA, and hope that members will continue connecting with young authors. If you are interested, please contact Jo Anne Buiteweg,  teacher at Sequoia High School,  jbuiteweg@everettsd.org.
