Dear Carolina parent,

Final exams are in full swing at the University of South Carolina after another great semester! Many students will be returning home in the next week, so we encourage you to talk with your son/daughter ahead of time about your expectations while he/she is living at home. Allowing your son/daughter also to state his/her expectations will help keep the lines of communication open throughout the summer.

Monthly tips for parents.
Visit the Office of Parents Programs website regularly to review the monthly tips that serve as a supplement to this newsletter.

Whether your son/daughter is taking classes, completing an internship or studying abroad this summer, we are here for you. Please continue to call the Parents Assistance Line at 1-800-868-6752 or send us an email at scparents@sc.edu if you have questions or feedback. As the central resource for parents on campus, we are here to get you the information you need to help your students be successful at Carolina.

Have a wonderful summer!

Because of this, My Carolina is able to extend to you a members-only opportunity to purchase a personalized brick on the historic Horseshoe for your graduate, allowing your student to leave a legacy for a lifetime in the heart of the University of South Carolina campus.

Horseshoe bricks make excellent gifts for graduation, weddings and to honor the life of a loved one. For more information on how to order an inscribed brick for your graduate, click here
Summer at Carolina offers expanded, flexible summer course schedule
Students can catch up, study abroad or online and even graduate in fewer than three years with the university's Summer at Carolina, starting this month. The new, eight-session calendar offers a full range of courses so that students can get ahead, stay on track for graduation or repair their GPAs with grade forgiveness to keep their state scholarships.

Summer at Carolina is part of On Your Time Graduation, the university's expansion to three full semesters that will give students the flexibility to progress through their degree program at their own pace.

News from the Bursar
Attention parents: the way students pay their bill is about to change.
On July 17, students will visit Self Service Carolina (SSC), not VIP, to access their fall 2013 fee and account information. Students will use their VIP ID and password to sign in at http://my.sc.edu.

In SSC, students will have the option to use electronic banking to both pay their bill and receive refunds. They'll also have the option to give their parents access to view statements and make payments.

Some things, however, are not changing. For example, the Office of the Bursar is still offering payment plans for eligible students. More information, including preliminary fee amounts, can be found here.

Maymester and Summer I 2013 bills

Bills are currently available via VIP for students who have registered for Maymester and Summer I classes. The deadline for mail-in payments is May 24. The deadline for online and walk-in payments is June 3. Walk-in payments can be made at the Bursar's Office located at 516 Main Street. Click here for more fee payment information.

College savings plans
If you have a college savings plan for your student, please remember to send a copy of your student's bill to your plan administrator as soon as bills are available on VIP to assure payments are received in a timely manner.

Financial aid overage checks
On May 28, financial aid overage checks will be mailed and direct deposits will be deposited for Maymester and Summer I 2013 prepaid students.

Residency status changes
Has your student's residency status changed within the last year? Current students may submit a S.C. Residency Certification Form on Self Service Carolina for the fall 2013 semester if they meet all of the eligibility criteria listed below:
  • Student has S.C. driver's license for at least 12 months prior to the first day of class
  • Student has S.C. car registration for at least 12 months prior to the first day of class (if applicable)
  • Student filed S.C. tax return

  • Student has certificate of independence from parents (if applicable)
  • Student has financial affidavit indicating he/she supports him/herself over 51 percent of the budget for the past year
  • Student is in S.C. for reasons other than attending the University of South Carolina
