All Beautiful Babies

During the Franklin County Baby Show on July 21, the judges had a difficult task selecting winners - with some classes having over a dozen babies. Each champion baby received Chamber Bucks from the Franklin County Chamber of Commerce. They also got a beautiful handmade quilt from the Quilt Batts Guild. All babies received a goodie bag and a participation ribbon.
Each spring, the Quilt Batts hold a quilt show to raise money for fabric that is used in quilts for the baby show winners and for nursing home residents. A committee is already selecting fabric and making plans for the 2017 Baby Show. Quilt Batts volunteer Diana Cooley invited anyone who wants to join the quilters to check Quilt Batts of Franklin County on Facebook for more information or visit www.quiltbatts.org.
Here are the results of the first 3 of 15 classes.

Most Handsome Baby Boy (through 3 months)
L-R: Champion Colton Shell, son of Lindsay & Jared Shell. Reserve Champion Liam Korner, son of Nicole and Aaron Korner.

Prettiest Baby Girl (through 3 months)
L-R: Champion Brooklyn Ratz, daughter of Rachel & Justin Ratz. Reserve Champion Irina Lainez, daughter of Clara Miller and Manny Lainez.

Twins (though 18 months)
Champions Isabela and Austin Fohl with parents Brook and Kurt Fohl.

Schoettmer Wins Showman of Showmen

Judge Jeremy Armstrong of Columbus, Indiana praised the participants in the Showman of Showmen competition for their skill, teamwork and courtesy to each other in the show ring.
The seven contestants qualified for the competition by winning the "showmanship" class in one of the seven livestock classes. During the Showman of Showmen competition, each of the contestants must show proficiency in working with all seven types of livestock.

L-R: Fair Queen Madison Payne and Annie Schoettmer

Annie Schoettmer won Showman of Showmen against tough competition and earned the silver belt buckle. Annie is 17 years old and a senior at Batesville High School. She is in her 8th year in 4-H and has shown sheep and beef along with competing in photography and scrapbooking. She qualified for the competition by winning showmanship at the sheep show earlier in the week.

L-R: The seven competitors by name and animal with which they qualified (L-R): Gracie Flaspohler (meat goat), Annie Schoettmer (sheep), Luke Stirn, (beef cattle), Grant Suding (horse), Louis Buckmeier (dairy goat), Kenzie Bingham (dairy cattle) and Hope Flaspohler (swine).

L-R: Sisters Gracie and Hope Flaspohler were both in the Showman contest this year. Gracie, age 17, has been showing animals at the Franklin County fair since she was age 9. This year was her eighth time competing in the overall Showman of Showmen class. She won the event in 2014. This was Hope's second time in the Showman contest. When Gracie and Hope were introduced to the audience, they both said how thankful they were for their sister's and for their family's support.
Marilyn and Ervin Roberts together with Jenny and Mick Wilz sponsored the event again this year. At the conclusion of the contest, Ms. Roberts complimented the young people for their determination and perseverance. She reminded them of all the support they received in 4-H since the third grade and she suggested that they give back to 4-H and their community when they are adults. All participants received a 4-H satchel, a t-shirt and video recording of the competition.
The livestock show ring had a major upgrade since last year with new gates, fencing, lighting and overhead fans, made possible by donations from the livestock associations.
