This is my last president's message to you.  Where have the last two years gone?  It's been the best of times, it's been the worst of times - they have always been interesting times!
I have been honored and blessed to work with this most amazing group of women.  They are a dedicated and passionate bunch!  Thank you to my team: Dolores Bussey; Jamye Chambers; Debbie Simmons; Marci Revelle; Maria Garza Brown; Crystal Caviness; Debbie Dawson; Michelle Foxworthy; Linda Jewett; Cinda Johnson; Cari Christman Ott; Pat Ott; Elaine Prout; Tillie Pope; Lee Ann Seitsinger; Lea Stoddard; Karen Withers; and Vivian Wood.  You would be surprised at the amount work that goes into making WCRW function smoothly and providing you an educational and interesting monthly lunch experience.
You will be in excellent hands next year with your new executive board: Co-Presidents Amy Ellsworth and Emily Pataki; 1st VP of Programs Shannon Way; 2nd VP of Membership Marci Revelle; Treasurer Debbie Simmons and Secretary Pat Grisham.
I have loved being President of this organization - I have grown in so many ways and have learned much.  Thank you for giving me this opportunity.

Legislative Update

Cari Christman-Ott

State Legislature to Consider Mandatory Drug Screening

Recently, Governor Perry was joined by Sen. Tommy Williams, Rep. Brandon Creighton and other lawmakers to call for reforms to the state's welfare and unemployment benefit programs, including authorizing drug screenings for those applying for Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) and Unemployment Insurance (UI) benefits.  Sen. Jane Nelson has pre-filed a bill for the upcoming legislative session to require drug screening for UI applicants.  They were also joined by representatives from the Texas Association of Business and National Federation of Independent Business.

Cornyn Tapped for New Role

Following the 2012 General Election, United States senator John Cornyn (R-Texas) was elected by his Republican colleagues to serve as Senate Minority Whip to the 113th Congress.  Cornyn previously served as Chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee from 2009-2012 and will be up for election in the 2014 mid-term cycle.

2013 Fiscal Cliff

Texas House Speaker Joe Straus recently announced the creation of the Interim Committee on Texas Response to Federal Sequestration, which will recommend ways that the state can prepare for looming tax increases and spending reductions caused by gridlock in Washington.  The Committee will study how the sequestration process will affect the defense industry in Texas, the state budget, public and higher education and the  tax burden on Texas families and businesses.  The Committee will also develop specific legislative proposals.  Speaker Straus appointed Rep. Linda Harper-Brown (R-Irving) to chair the Committee.
