PLANTING A SEED IN A DESPERATE HEART -

A STUDENT STORY

"My name is Samuel Amwai and I was two years old when our family was traumatized by my father's death. He used to make the ends meet in our family. Things became quite hard for my mum and we had to move from our home in Kayole to Korogocho, Nairobi. The challenges our family faced made me run away from home to the streets in search of a better life. I was 7 years old.

Life in the streets of Nairobi was not good at all, going for days with no food, sleeping in sacks, wearing rags and drug abuse was my new lifestyle. The worst part of it was that the police kept chasing us away from the streets, harassing and brutally beating us if they caught any of us, before taking us to juvenile cells. I hated snatching women handbags to make a living. I hated doing this but ironically I could not avoid it. My magical moment happened when I was taken to a children's home. I met up with a guy who was a social worker in a children's home. After a chat with him, he was good and kind enough to rescue me from the streets. I survived in the streets for four months.

Nyumba Ya Tumaini Children's Home has been my home for the last ten years. It has molded me into the type of person I am today. In conjunction with Education For All Children, I have been able to go through primary and high school education.

I graduated from secondary school in 2014 and scored a GRADE of A-. I plan to pursue a career in pharmacy. Currently I am volunteering at my former primary school as a teacher, as well as doing some farming at the home.

My dream is to help the needy in the society and start up a children's home for the street boys because they have great potential in them and if given a chance they can be great people!

When I was desperate and hopeless in life Nyumba Ya Tumaini and EFAC came into my life and planted a seed in a desperate heart. They are the reason why I don't regret what I went through in past for they have granted me an opportunity to design and shape my future!"

The Power of 1

Launched in May with the mailing of the 2013 Annual Report EFAC asked each sponsor to commit to the Power of 1. The Power of 1 is designed to break the cycle of poverty and combat youth unemployment through education.

We are appealing to every sponsor to recruit just 1 new sponsor in 2014 to share in the EFAC journey and to be part of changing 1 more life. Imagine the possibilities for change if every person tells 1 more person about their EFAC story.

Share with  your friends how your choice to become a sponsor is changing the life of both a student in Kenya and your life here at home. Introduce your friends to the EFAC team and we will continue the conversation, share more information and help people get involved.  Together we can grow the number of sponsors and the number of students.

Meet Lori Evans

The team at EFAC is growing! Lori Evans joined us as Director of Development in April. Lori comes to EFAC with 10 years of experience as a non-profit fundraising professional. Prior to this new role with the EFAC team, Lori was most recently

the Director of Development of Doctors of the World USA and before that at Mustard Seed Communities. At both organizations, she was their first Director of Development as well and worked to formalize and grow the fundraising programs.

Lori is a New Hampshire native with extensive international travel experience, and a love of travelling in Africa. She was thrilled to make her first trip to Kenya in May to meet the EFAC team and visit with students attending the Computer and Careers Workshop.

EFAC Golf and Tennis Tournament Best Ever!

Education for All Children is grateful to all those that 7th Annual Golf and Tennis Tournament participated in, supported, and volunteered at the Seventh Annual EFAC Golf & Tennis Classic. This year the event returned to the Wentworth By The Sea Country Club and the competition was as exciting as ever. The amazing weather contributed to the day's success.

Together, we raised a record amount, over $45,000, to support EFAC scholars. The auction included the opportunity to purchase computers for post-secondary students. One very generous donor completed the purchase of the remaining computers needed for IT and Engineering students.

Thank you to all of those who supported this important event. We look forward to seeing you  next year!

Education For all Children provides scholarships and mentoring to bright but financially challenged Kenyan students to create scholars who are leaders, productive members of the community, and advocate for peace and stability.
