Melanoma Increase in Young Women As you may or may not know, Dr. Dabbah is the plastic surgeon associated and involved with the multi-modality clinic at Boca Regional Hospital. He and other doctors (oncologists, radiologists and dermatologists) review interesting and unique skin cancer cases and this article became of interest to him. We have seen an increase in melanoma in younger adults and it is quite concerning. The most recent study from the University of Minnesota indicates that women under 40 who started tanning at a young age and continued, have a higher incidence of melanoma. The study looked specifically at indoor tanning and the study showed that women who tanned indoors were two to six times more likely to develop melanoma. The amount of radiation in these beds is comparable to the sun and in some cases, may actually produce more radiation. CBSNews.com, 1/27/16 |
Insult to Injury - Love Yourself The US Preventative Services Task Force has updated its 2009 recommendations for breast mammograms. So, if you weren't confused before..
In 2009, we were angry and offended that the Task Force recommended that women with average risk for breast cancer start their mammograms at the age of 50. Even the American Cancer Society suggested the age of 45 (but and then go every other year until the age of 50). Now the Task Force says one size doesn't fit all and that women at the age of 40 can opt to begin their screenings but want us to understand the statistics. Of every 1000 patients, one additional death is saved if started at the age of 40, but there are 576 false alarms, and 58 unnecessary needle biopsies. Also, two women would be overly diagnosed and treated for cancer that was not life threatening. At least now, the government is treating us as intelligent women who can make up our own minds. Your Child And Ear Surgery Ever noticed some children's ears stick out or are misshapen? Ear surgery (otoplasty) has become increasingly popular over the years because people are more aware of the surgery. Many parents feel guilty about subjecting their child to cosmetic surgery at a young age, but that is the perfect time to do the surgery. At about 5 or 6 years old, kids start to make fun, or even bully, children because of their physical attributes. That's when a parent knows it's the right decision. To wait until the child is older, or even an adult, means a lifetime of ridicule. There's no question you love your child the way he/she is, but if he or she isn't happy and this will make a difference, it's worth looking into.FoxNews, 10/13/15

Have A Heart Did you know that symptoms of heart attack in women can be quite different than that of a man? Did you know that heart disease in women in under researched, under diagnosed and under treated? Women are harder to diagnose so we women have to be in touch with our bodies and question when something doesn't feel right. One women had chest tightening radiating up to her chin. Other symptoms are fatigue, nausea or even pain that is not in the chest. It's noted that 42% of women who have had heart attacks have NOT felt pain in the chest.
And being properly diagnosed is a problem too. Many women aren't. And even if they are, they are not given the guideline-driven medications. WE NEED TO BE PROACTIVE and when the answer doesn't seem obvious, push for heart studies!! CBSNews.com, 1/26/2016
