We hope this Thanksgiving is a special one for you and your loved ones!! It is particularly exciting to Dr. Dabbah and me as our girls will be home together for the first time since the beginning of the summer. But it's especially poignant, and we are particularly thankful, because (and I am getting on the platform) our little pup, Pebbles, who many of you know, was very sick this past month. Although the package of her treats was fully endorsed by the Veterinary Society, and stated it was made in the USA, it was acually produced in China. (You may have read about this in the news). But by the time we caught on that something was wrong, her kidneys had shut down 75%. We are so very lucky to have caught it when we did!!
Please, PLEASE, PLEASE, take a look at what you are feeding your animals. Take a look at the bottom of the package, as that is where we found it, in very small letters. Boycott everything China! It's really scary because, although the FDA is now looking into it, they cannot figure out what is causing the animals to be so sick, with so very many of them dying.
So, be thankful for what you have and have a Healthy and Happy Thanksgiving with your family and friends!
Warmly,
Robin

Breast Implants and Sex A study from Brazil suggests that women who had breast augmentation experienced an increase in arousal and satisfaction following the surgery. It is thought that the surgery increased confidence of the women, in and out of their clothes.
Interestingly, the study also found that those who had stretch marks after getting the implants did not experience the same increase in sexual satisfaction. This may be that if the implants were too large causing the skin to stretch, the nerves got stretched too and may decrease sensation.

Oreos Are Addicting
We are always talking about how food affects us. There is now proof. A study by a team at Connecticut College that found that high fat/sugary foods are similar to drugs, ie. cocaine, in their affect on our body. Hungry rats were put into a maze. One side held rice cakes, the other, Oreo cookies. No question where they preferred to go. This was compared to a different test in which rats received an injection of saline on one side ot the maze, and on the other, cocaine or morphine. When allowed to wander freely, the rats would congregate on the Oreo side just as much as they did on the drug-induced side of the maze. By the way, just like most of us, the rats liked the creamy center better than the chocolate cookie. The results indicate what high fat and sugary food affects our brains the same as drugs!! Smoking and Aging
In the past newsletters, I have discussed smoking and its affects on not only health, but also surgery. Now there is a study showing its affects on aging. Researchers at Case Western compared the faces of identical twins and showed that prematurely ages a person's skin, even after just 5 years. The twins wo were smokers showed more wrinkles, creases and jowls. They showed baggy eyes, baggy cheeks, smile lines and wrinkles along the upper and lower lips. healthyliving.msn.com,10/31/13 | |
Wine Shortage
There is a concern that a global wine shortage is coming our way. No kidding! Morgan Stanley Research stated that there was a global undersupply of about 300 million cases of wine in 2012, the most noted in 50 years. The reason? Less land is being used in Spain, France and Italy countries that make up 60% of the world's wine) to grow grapes. You may be asking why I am writing this in the newsletter. Well, because I am always thinking about health and if there is less wine, where will I get my antioxidants?!? |

Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper
3 TBL dried cranberries
3/4 cup apple cider or apple juice
2 TBL cider vinegar
2 TBL minced shallots
2 teas Dijon mustard
4 oz baby arugula, washed and spun dry
1/2 cup walnut halves, toasted
