HAPPY HOLIDAYS
It is that time of year that food and drink are all around us. To that end, I found numerous and interesting articles that pertain to this great desire and source of contentment.
Our office wishes you all a truly wonderful holiday, filled with love, joy, laughter and, above all, health.

Boosting Brain Power
Drink green tea. Green tea drinkers experienced an increase in the activation of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, the part of the brain that deals with the working memory, which you need for problem solving and focus.
It is thought that the polyphenols help prevent neurotransmitters, like dopamine and epinephrine, from degrading.

Grapefruit, not always good for you
Apparently, there are at least 43 drugs that, when combined with grapefruit, can cause dangerous, if not deadly, results. For example, the drug dronedarone, or Multaq, may cause a rare form of rapid heart rhythm. Mixing the painkiller oxycodone with grapefruit can cause serious breathing problems and adding grapefruit to a dose of Zocor can lead to rhabdomyolysis, a breakdown of muscle fibers that can lead to kidney damage. Dr. David Bailey at the Lawson Health Institute Research Center in London, Ontario first noticed, over 20 years ago, that grapefruit mixed with certain prescription drugs can concentrate the medication in a patient's bloodstream.
The same holds true with consumption of other citrus fruits, like limes, pomelos and even the Seville oranges. Yet, it doesn't hold for sweet oranges, like navel and Valencia. Apparently it is the enzyme in the fruits, called CYP3A4, that inactivates the effects of about 50% of the medications.
So, make sure to speak to your doctor and pharmacist about the drugs you take and grapefruit!!

 The Pleasure Drug
Coffee is again reported as being one of the best ways to care for yourself; it protects the heart, lowers the risk of several forms of cancer and reduces the risk of Parkinson's disease.
It protects the body by its numerous antioxidants. It invigorates the mind, facilitating cognitive function and is a mood enhancer. And, in a study published in the
Archives of Internal Medicine, Harvard researchers found that drinking caffeinated coffee lowered the rates of depression in women (and to note: women's depression rates did not decrease with decaffeinated coffee).

Black Gold
So, now we know how good it is for us, how much would you spend on a cup of coffee? A new blend at Starbucks, Costa Rica Finca Palmilera, costs over $80 a pound!!! It is so special because it grows only at very high altitudes and "the tree's low yield allows for more of the soil's nutrients to reach each cherry, intensifying the coffee's vibrant flavors."
There are 48 stores that sell it and 46 of them are in Seattle and Portland.

The Day After...(How to Fight the Hangover)
(1) Stay Hydrated... Drink a lot of water before drinks and during the evening.
(2) Eat Bananas...Besides acting as a natural antacid, easing the nausea, it will replace some of the potassium and magnesium that is lost.
(3) Ginger...Grind it up, eat it raw or drink it in tea. It will soothe your stomach.
(4) Asparagus... Eat it that day and for dinner that night. Studies show this vegetable breaks down alcohol in your system.
