It's back to school time -- for your kids and your dogs! Everyone seems to be excited about fall classes, as our rosters are filling up. We do still have a few openings in our Canine Good Citizen class that begins September 22 in West Columbia. It will be the last time it's offered this year, so register today!

Fall is also popular for conferences, and I'll be hitting the road speaking at several events. In September I'll be presenting at the sold-out Pet Sitters International World Conference just up the road in Myrtle Beach, SC. And in October, I fly to Dallas, TX, to speak at the Association of Professional Dog Trainers annual educational conference.

In my last issue, I mentioned my new book on solving dog behavior problems. We're proofing it now! I believe it should launch later this fall. This issue features an update on my radio shows -- be sure to check out Lost and Found Pets. I cover what to do if your pet goes missing. It's a show I hope you never need, but it's great information to have just in case. You'll also find an article on popular canine names -- is your dog's name on the list?

I hope you and your families are enjoying the season, and please give your dogs cookies from me!

What's In a Name?

Nextdoor, a social networking site, recently released a list of the most popular dog names in various cities, as well as nationwide. The names were aggregated anonymously from users representing 70,000 neighborhoods across the country.

The closest list to our area seemed to be Charlotte, NC. Here are the most popular dog names for that city:
  1. Bella Basenji
  2. Bailey
  3. Cooper
  4. Lucy
  5. Max
  6. Dolly
  7. Daisy
  8. Maggie
  9. Charlie
  10. Chloe
I have to say from our class attendees, that list seems pretty close to us, too!

The site also listed the most popular names for some different breeds. Again for Charlotte:
  • Charlie - mixed breeds
  • Jake - Labrador Retrievers, German Shepherds
  • Cooper - Golden Retrievers
  • Tyson - Boxers
  • Winston - Yorkshire Terriers
  • Coco - Chihuahuas
