It may have been a while since I've written, but things have been racing along for me and Pawsitive Results!

Classes are in full swing this spring, including our new Canine Good Citizen class. If you missed signing up for that, no worries. We'll hold it again in September! Now's definitely the time to sign up for Rally for Fun -- the only time we're offering the class this year!

My latest two books have been doing extremely well -- thanks very much for your support! I'm also really excited about the book I just finished writing. It's all about solving typical canine problem behaviors. I'll keep you posted when it's published.

Gaze Into My Eyes ...
  Finian's gaze

Is it bad if your dog gazes into your eyes? More often than not, it's a loving look. The feeling is mutual. And science is proving it!

Takefumi Kikusui, an animal behaviorist at Azabu University in Sagamihara, Japan, works in a laboratory that studies oxytocin. Oxytocin is the hormone that is involved in maternal bonding, trust and altruism.

When a mother looks into the eyes of her baby, the baby's oxytocin level rises. This causes the mother's oxytocin to also rise, forming a hormonal loop of emotional bonding. Kikusui wanted to find out if a similar action occurred when dog owners looked into the eyes of their dogs, and vice versa.

Kikusui's experiment showed that mutual gazing had a significant effect on both dogs and their owners. Of the person-dog teams that spent the most time looking in each other's eyes, both male and female dogs experienced a 130 percent increase in oxytocin levels. Both male and female owners experienced a 300 percent increase.

In a second experiment, dogs were given a nasal spray of oxytocin before they interacted with their owners. Female dogs then spent 150 percent more time gazing into the eyes of their owners. Their owners had a 300 percent increase in oxytocin. There was no effect on male dogs that had the nasal spray, or in dogs that were given a nasal spray of just saline. Researchers think the effect on females vs. males may be due to the role oxytocin plays in female reproduction.

This study was published in Science, with the results suggesting that human-dog interactions elicit the same type of oxytocin feedback loop as seen between mothers and their infants. (If you want to read the study, you'll find it here.)

So when you get all goo-goo eyed at your dog and he returns your gaze, science is backing you up. It's the look of love!

National Dog Bite Prevention Week
Snarling dog
May 17-23, 2015

The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) created the National Dog Bite Prevention Week to help educate people on how to prevent dog bites.
  • Each year, more than 4.5 million people in the U.S. are bitten by dogs.
  • Most dog bites affecting young children occur during everyday activities and while interacting with familiar dogs.

Most dog bites can be prevented. Here are some tips:

  • Properly socialize your puppy to help prevent fear and aggression issues later. All socialization experiences should be positive ones.
  • Keep your dog healthy. Dogs who are sick or injured might bite. As your dog ages, watch for signs he may be suffering from arthritis or other issues that might make him less tolerant of handling.
  • If you come across a stray dog, do not run. Do not look the dog directly in the eyes.

Dogs are our dear companions. But they all have teeth, and all dogs can bite. Be safe!
