It's been awhile! I'm sorry for the delay. I've been busy at my laptop, but working on a big deadline -- my next book! I've just written a new dog training book for DogFancy. Now that the manuscript is with the publisher, I can catch you up on what else has been going on with Pawsitive Results!

We're currently registering for classes in April. Get some spring training with your dog! We're also contributing articles to the Columbia Star newspaper, and I've launched a new podcast on Pet Life Radio! Get the scoop in this issue. You'll also get some helpful tips on keeping your pets safe from household poisons and your entire family safe around pet food and treats.

Please give your dogs cookies from me!

Danger: Poison!
The ASPCA Poison Control Center handled almost 180,000 cases in 2013 of pets potentially being exposed to toxic substances. What topped the list? Human prescription medication! Be sure to keep your medications safely put away where your dog cannot reach them.

Here are the top 10 pet toxins ranked in order of call volume to the Center:
  1. Prescription human medications
  2. Insecticides
  3. Over-the-counter human medications
  4. Household products
  5. People food
  6. Veterinary products and medications
  7. Chocolate
  8. Rodenticides
  9. Plants
  10. Lawn and garden products

If you've ever wondered if an item is poisonous or not, the Poison Control Center's experts set the issue straight with the Okay or No Way list.

If you suspect your pet has ingested something toxic, please contact your veterinarian or the Animal Poison Control Center's 24-hour hotline at (888) 426-4435. Please note that a $65 fee may be applied to your credit card. This is well worth your pet's life, however, if he gets hold of something dangerous!

Pet Food & Treats: Keeping Safe
Dog treats and stethoscope With all the pet food and treat recalls over the past years, people are becoming more conscious about food safety for their pets. Did you know that if your pet's food is contaminated, it can also make you sick?

Here are some great tips in a video from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on keeping everyone in your family safe.

An especially helpful tip is the one to always keep your current bag of pet food. If you store your pet's food in an air-safe container that is great, but if you later suspect the food may be making your pet sick, you will need the information on the bag to help your veterinarian and the FDA research the issue.

A few precautions will go a long way in keeping your family safe.
