Happy holiday season! We are wrapping up the last of our classes for this year, and already taking registration for 2014! If you're in gift shopping mode, we've included some of our favorite things in this newsletter you may want to consider.

I've been on the road the past few months, speaking at conferences. In September I spoke at the Petsitters International Quest for Excellence in Winston-Salem, N.C. What a great group of attendees! In October it was off to Spokane, W.A. to speak at the Association of Professional Dog Trainers' 20th annual conference. The APDT conference is always stellar, and a great opportunity to learn from all the wonderful speakers on the agenda. I always bring home new ideas!

Wishing you a safe, healthy and happy holiday season. We are looking forward to seeing you more in the New Year! Please give your dogs cookies from me,

Some of Our Favorite ThingsSanta Sawyer

It's the gift giving season. If you're looking for ideas for the dogs and dog lovers in your life, we've got some ideas to share! Here are a few of our favorite things.

Magazines
These make great last-minute gifts! (Not that you would wait until the last minute, of course.) As mentioned, Teoti has a regular training column in Modern Dog magazine. We're also fans of Bark magazine and The Whole Dog Journal

Collars
Looking for a unique collar for your special dog? Try Pecan Pie Puppies (created by former Pawsitive Results assistant instructor Ryan Dawkins). There is a beautiful holiday collection as well as collars for everyday use. You can also get matching leashes.

If you prefer leather, check out Paco collars. These are gorgeous collars made of top quality leather, and the company also features leashes, unique ID tags and cat collars.

Exercise K9 Cruiser
Do you have a boisterous dog with energy to burn? Maybe an overweight dog who could stand to lose a few pounds? Ask Santa for a K9 Cruiser. This easy-to-use leash attaches to any bicycle for safe, fun exercise. And don't think you need to be ready to compete in the Tour de France -- a slow, easy bike ride for you will mean a great workout for your dog!

Toys
It can be hard to find dog toys that stand up to power chewers. We're always big fans of durable Kong toys. The classic Kong rubber toy is a standby, and new favorites include the Bounzer and the Wobbler. Nylabone also makes some really tough chews, with their Durachew line being especially durable. Another new favorite tough line of toys is from Chomper

Shop In Person
Want to visit a store to find just the right gift? Visit our friends at Pupcakes Dog Boutique and Bakery in Columbia, S.C. You'll find some baked treats dog love, as well as beds, toys and more.

Quincy the Pit Bull wearing a Pecan Pie Puppies collar
We recognize that smile!
Teoti has a regular column in Modern Dog magazine, answering questions from readers about dog behavior. The latest issue also features a handsome addition very familiar to us -- Quincy the Pit Bull Terrier!

Quincy's mom is former Pawsitive Results assistant instructor, Ryan Dawkins. Quincy is sporting one of Ryan's beautiful custom-made collars, which are highlighted in the magazine's gift guide.

Holiday Manners

Planning on guests for the holidays? Use the visit as a training session for your dog!
  • Remember that even the best known exercises can get a little shaky with all the distractions of visitors. Be patient with your dog. Practice his manners training before guests arrive, to keep things fresh for the both of you.
  • If your dog is boisterous when greeting people, put him on leash for all greetings. Use your "Sit" cue. Don't allow anyone to pet him unless he is sitting. The more you practice, the better he will get at polite greetings.
  • Don't let visitors feed your dog anything he shouldn't have. Nothing ruins a holiday like spending it at the emergency veterinary clinic!
