Adding to the Family ... Part 1 It's been said that dogs are like potato chips ... you can't just have one! If you are thinking about adding another dog to your family, here are some things to consider first. - Does your existing dog already enjoy the company of other dogs? Some dogs love canine companionship. Other dogs make it very clear they really don't like other dogs. This is actually not unusual ... do you like everyone you meet? If your dog has a history of aggression towards other dogs, getting a new dog, even a puppy, will not "cure" him. It could make your existing dog's aggression worse, and it will adversely affect the new dog as well.
- Are you having behavior problems with your existing dog? For example, does she pee in the house, bark at the neighbors or chew up your things? Those problems won't go away if you get a new dog, and your existing dog could be teaching the new one bad habits! Consider getting some training for your existing dog so her manners are nicely in place before you disrupt your routine with a new dog.
- Dogs warm our hearts, but they also can drain our checking accounts. Be sure you have enough money to pay for proper veterinary checkups, vaccinations, heartworm prevention and other expenses.
- Is everyone in the family on board with a new addition? If parents are set on an adult dog but the kids want a puppy, or if you want a cuddly little lap dog and your spouse wants a strapping large breed, this could be an issue. No dog does well when there's resentment in the family. Make sure everyone in your household is on the same page.
If you've taken everything into consideration and you're ready to bring another dog into your family, there are definitely things you can do to make the transition easier for your existing dog. We'll cover those in our next issue! |

More Pet Food Recalls
It seems like we are reporting these in every issue! It's very frustrating, but it's important for you to keep up with the latest updates on pet food recalls to keep your animals safe.
The Honest Kitchen has issued a recall on some of its Thrive, Verve and Zeal products due to potential salmonella.
Natura Pet has also issued a recall on several of its pet foods due to potential salmonella. This includes Evo, Innova, California Natural and Healthwise.

Fine Tuning Your Training
It happens to even the best students. They do really well in Family Manners class, but then time passes, they get busy and some of their skills start to fade. The dog that aced walking in class is now pulling you down the street again. The dog who sat so politely to be petted is now jumping on your guests. What happened?
When we don't practice skills, we get rusty. Your dog is the same. If you're not practicing your family manners training regularly, it's completely normal for your dog's skills to fade.
Oftentimes, taking another Family Manners class isn't really needed (although you are always welcome!). If you just need some brushing up on specific skills, such as walking nicely on leash or behaving with guests, sign up for our Fine Tuning private lessons. We offer discounted rates to our previous students and each private lesson is specifically tailored to you and your dog. Don't wait until behaviors get worse.
