Greetings!

Teoti and Roxy

We are coming off a whirlwind January after celebrating National Train Your Dog Month! I went from dogs to dolphins, with a very special trip to Discovery Cove, Orlando. A good friend of mine arranged the visit, and we enjoyed a wonderful "behind the scenes" look at how the trainers work with these amazing animals and other animals at the park. It was fantastic to see all the positive training! I had the privilege of interacting with the beautiful Roxy -- she even gave me a ride back to shore! It was a thrilling experience.

We've got lots of training opportunities for you in February. We still have openings in our Family Manners I class in Irmo, beginning February 26. If you're ready for the next step, we only offer Family Manners II a couple times a year, so now's your chance to sign up for the West Columbia class beginning February 28! If you always wanted to learn how to volunteer with your dog or cat, you'll have a chance February 23 during the Pet Partners Team Training workshop.

In this issue you'll also read our recap on National Train Your Dog month and learn about some major recalls of chicken jerky treats made in China.

Please give your dogs cookies from me,

Deadly Treats Made In China

Danger Sign
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration's Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM) has released its report on its investigation into reports of illnesses and deaths associated with jerky pet treats made in China.

According to the FDA, "FDA is in communication with the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets (NYSDAM) regarding its finding of antibiotic residues in chicken jerky treats from China. Correspondingly, Del Monte, the company that makes Milo's Kitchen Chicken Jerky Treats and Chicken Grillers, and Nestle-Purina, the makers of Waggin' Train and Canyon Creek Ranch dog treats have both initiated a nationwide removal of these products from the market."

Before you buy your dog any treat, check to see if it is made in China. If it is, don't take a chance! Don't buy treats made in China, as there do not appear to be quality controls in place to protect our pets.

Fostering Dogs for Success!

National Train Your Dog Month

National Train Your Dog Month Logo

January was a great National Train Your Dog Month! The Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT) launched National Train Your Dog Month in 2010. The goal is to bring awareness to the importance of socialization and training your dog.

If you missed the webinars, including Teoti Anderson's "Hooligans: Living With Canine Teenagers" and "Crate Training and Housetraining Basics," you can still listen to them absolutely free. Just visit www.trainyourdogmonth.com.

Our free workshop for foster dog parents, Fostering Dogs for Success!, was very well received. Participants reported their favorite part was learning more about canine behavior, and what they wanted more of was "how to" training tips. Based on the results, we plan on expanding this workshop and holding it again. We'll keep you posted through the newsletter.

We also enjoyed meeting folks and answering questions at Pupcakes Pet Boutique.

Finally, congratulations to Elma Rodney for her winning entry in our Facebook "Leave It" contest! Max and Shadow REALLY wanted these treats, but were good boys and left them alone.

Just because National Train Your Dog Month is over, doesn't mean it's time to stop training your dog! Keep up the great work year round with Pawsitive Results!
