May is Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, and to celebrate, PIC is proud to present a range of powerful films to public television viewers nationwide. We've included a few highlights in this month's newsletter, but please visit the PIC website to see the full lineup.

Pacific Islanders in Communications and PBS Hawaii, in partnership with American Public Television (APT) proudly announce the Hawaii premiere of the fourth season of Pacific Heartbeat, a fascinating anthology series focused on the people, cultures, languages, music and contemporary issues of Pacific Islanders, the indigenous people of Melanesia, Micronesia and Polynesia. 


 

Road to the Globe premieres Saturday, May 9th at 8:00 p.m., and Nā Loea: The Masters II premieres Saturday, May 16th at 8:00 p.m. Learn more about each episode and get broadcast details here.

Standing on Sacred Ground Premiere on PBS Hawaii and The WORLD Channel May 9 & 16

In this four-part documentary series, native people share ecological wisdom and spiritual reverence while battling a utilitarian view of land in the form of consumer culture and resource extraction as well as competing religions and climate change. 

 

Airing on PBS Hawaii May 9 & 16, immediately following the premiere of Pacific Heartbeat Season 4 episodes Road to the Globe and Nā Loea: The Masters II. Winning Girl follows the four-year journey of Teshya Alo, a part-Polynesian teenage judo and wrestling phenomenon from Hawaiʻi, and in doing so tells the dynamic story of an elite athlete on her ascent, a girl facing the challenges of growing up, and an entire family dedicated to a single dream.


 

America ReFramed films present personal viewpoints and a range of voices on the nation's social issues - giving audiences the opportunity to learn from the past, understand the present, and explore new frameworks for America's future. With weekly 60- to 90-minute independent films, followed by provocative conversations led by host/moderator Natasha Del Toro, this weekly series offers an unfiltered look at people rarely given a voice on national television. Premiering on The WORLD Channel Tuesday, May 12 at 8:00 p.m. ET/5:00 p.m. PT, and available to stream online for a limited time beginning Wednesday, May 13th. Our first PIC Exchange was a free two-night community engagement event held Thursday, April 30 and Friday, May 1 at Doris Duke Theatre at the Honolulu Museum of Art. The Pacific Heartbeat Season 4 episodes Road to the Globe and Nā Loea: The Masters II were screened then followed by panel discussions exploring the importance of language and cultural preservation, sustainability and health. Thank you to our event partners Oiwi TV and Doris Duke Theatre for their generous support, and thank you to the audience members who attended our inaugural PIC Exchange. Established in Honolulu in 1991 as a national nonprofit media arts corporation, PIC is a member of the National Minority Consortia, which collectively addresses the need for programming that reflects America's growing ethnic and cultural diversity.
