House Bill 2078 Would Abolish the Capitol Zoning District Commission

HB2078, sponsored by Representative Nate Bell (R-Mena), proposes to abolish the Capitol Zoning District Commission, a critical tool for protecting the areas around the State Capitol and the Governor's Mansion. For five decades, the CZDC has protected the unique character of these neighborhoods by acting as a special planning and historic preservation commission. This bill would shift protection to the Office of the Secretary of State and the City of Little Rock. While originally filled as a bill to restrict the power of the CZDC in specific ways, the bill was amended on April 4 to abolish the commission as of July 1, 2013. HB2078 will be heard by the House Committee on State Agencies and Governmental Affairs, which meets Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
