"Forgiving is not forgetting; its actually remembering--remembering and not using your right to hit back. It's a second chance for a new beginning. And the remembering part is particularly important. Especially if you don't want to repeat what happened."

National School Counselling Week Kickoff at UWRF

Kris Miner and Catherine Cranston presented on Restorative Justice in Education at the university Monday, February 4th. Kris introduced Restorative Justice principles and explained how they can apply in the classroom. They spoke about how Restorative Justice can help build connections and understanding between students, teachers and faculty. Bullying was a central topic. Circles are a useful process to help address bullying while maintaining a feeling of safety for all participants.

Catherine Cranston offered a teacher's perspective on how classroom Circles can benefit students through giving them a voice. Catherine has been trained and utilizing Circles in the classroom since 2007. She has used Restorative Justice Circles for a range of incidents, and twice daily in her classroom. She sees the value in asking simple yes-no questions for younger students, as this allows for everyone involved to get positive attention and a time to be heard.

If you are interested in learning more about Restorative Justice in the classroom, please contact Kris Miner at 715-425-1100 or email scvrjp@gmail.com. School trainings are available. Please see our website for details.  You can find the powerpoint on Slideshare.

Recognizing Black History Month
In February we observe Black History Month. We recognize the Little Rock 9 and the push to desegregate schools. Today we would like to see Restorative Justice Circles and philosophies being used in schools to resolve issues and create a sense of belonging. Who are you remembering this month?
