Preparing Your Yard for Winter
By the time the gardening season winds down, many gardeners, like their lackluster plants, are spent. It is all too easy to ignore the work that waits outside. But by accomplishing a few simple chores before winter takes over, you can ensure healthier and happier plants next spring.
And once it does start to snow and freeze, use de-icing materials sparingly. Many of these are salt derivatives and can "burn" your plants if you use too much.
An Extraordinary September
Ordinarily, September is the start of a quieter season the gardens, but this year two events made last month extra special and memorable.

Each year since the  attacks of September 11, 2001, the Davis County Youth of Promise organization has hosted a memorial service on that anniversary. This year's memorial service  featured a dedication of a monument at the Utah State University Botanical Center in Kaysville. When Salt Lake County needed help with an erosion prevention project in Emigration Canyon they came to our native plant experts for help. Plants were started in the USUBC greenhouse and thanks to the efforts of Master Gardeners and 125 volunteers, more than 500 trees and shrubs were planted in Emigration Canyon on September 21st. Click here to read more about the event, and future planting opportunities.
