Plant Now for a Beautiful Spring

Each spring, gardeners (and lucky passersby) are treated to the show of crocus, tulips and daffodils that seems all the more beautiful in northern Utah after long, cold winters. A beautiful, colorful spring in the garden begins now with a little extra effort in the fall.  Jerry Goodspeed has some great tips for selecting and planting bulbs that are plentiful in garden stores right now and that will brighten your landscape next year. This Month at the Market

Join us this month at the Farmers Market for a variety of events that are sure to please every member of the family! Stop by the market on September 19 for a mini quilt show put on by the quilter's group called, Pickles. This is a local group of Hess Farms ladies who have joined together to help preserve the wonderful art of quilting.  Enjoy their beautiful work while listening to music of the National Parks Band.

If cooking is your niche, join us on the 26th for our annual Chili Cook-Off and get some delicious ideas for using all the fresh peppers, chilies and tomatoes available at the market. Also all the USUBC gardens will be open to the public for tours with USU Extension horticulturist, Britney Hunter and some of our great garden stewards.

Make sure to check out the Farmers Market Facebook page, or click herefor more information. As always don't forget to pick up our free Live Well Utah recipe cookbook!

Our night walk will take us out to The Natural Conservancy's Great Salt Lake Shorelands Preserve, where we'll test our "night vision", learn about nocturnal creatures, and see what adaptations are needed to make it in the dark. The walk will be an easy one, but please dress for the weather. No flashlights necessary.
