A Guide to Common Gardening Questions on Sale

This user friendly, step-by-step guide, provides Utahns with recommendations for successful vegetable and fruit production in Northern Utah areas. The publication includes instructions on garden preparation, variety selection, garden layout and planting, starting garden plants from seed and container gardening. It also includes information on garden soil as well as garden maintenance, weed control and fall-time garden turn down.  

Contributing writers include Katie Wagner, USU Horticulture Extension assistant professor in Salt Lake County, Dr. Dan Drost, USU Extension Vegetable Specialist and Shawn Olsen, USU Agricultural Extension professor in Davis County. To read more, or to purchase your own copy,

Summer/Fishing Camps Registrations Now Open
4-H Aggie Adventures for Kids Summer Camps 2013
Come explore the wonderful, slimy, wet, magic and beautiful world of nature at the USU Botanical Center this summer! Each summer camp in our series is designed for a particular age group and is full of fun, hands-on experiments for investigating the world in which we live. Youth Fishing Camp 2013 Youth Fishing Camp at the USU Botanical Center is a great opportunity for local children to learn how to fish in a safe, friendly environment. We provide all of the necessary equipment, but you can also bring your own. Each day starts with a 30 minutes lesson, followed by an hour and half of fishing. USUBC Baby Animal Days 

USU Botanical Center will hold its Second Annual Baby Animal Days next month! 

Friday, May 10, 2 pm - 8 pm
Saturday, May 11, 10 am - 6 pm

Come meet ducklings, chicks, bunnies, kids, piglets, calves, baby llamas, miniature horses, and new this year, baby reptiles! other activities will include horse rides, sheep shearing demos, food vendors, face painting, miniature train rides and a climbing wall. Wings & Waters Naturalist Guide Training
Our Wings & Waters Naturalist Guide program is in need of volunteers! Come to an orientation to learn more about the opportunity to educate 4th grade students on the wetlands of the Great Salt Lake ecosystem.

Both events will be held at the Wetland Discovery Point, across the ponds from the Utah House.

Landscape Design Class 

 

When: Wednesdays, April 3 - May 1

Where: USUBC Greenhouse

Time: 9 am - 12 pm

Cost: For 5 Classes, $84 Members, $99 Public  

Registration is still open for our popular landscape design course that begins the first Wednesday of this month! Learn the basics of landscape design, such as considering how you'll use and maintain your landscape, how to design and drawn your plan, and how to choose the right plants for your own beautiful landscape. A private consultation with course instructors to review your plan will be given on the last day of the course. All materials needed including handbooks, graph paper and design tools will be provided. 

 

 

Explore the Garden Family Night: Spring Celebration and Picnic for the Planet 

   

When: Monday, April 22 

Where: Utah House at USUBC 

Time: 6:30 - 8 pm

Cost: Free 

 

The earth provides nourishment for over 7 billion people everyday! The Nature Conservancy of Utah protects the lands and waters on which all life depends, and we're teaming up with them at the USUBC to celebrate it! Explore the Garden Family Night: An Evening Filled with Birds! 

 

When: Monday, May 20 

Where: USUBC Wetland Discovery Point 

Time: 6:30 pm - 8 pm 

Cost: $12.00 per family up to 6 people or $3 per person

 

 

Be prepared for activities and avian exploration for the whole family. We'll look at basic identification and anatomy for all ages and spend time walking the trails around our system of ponds. The family night is a part of the Great Salt Lake Bird Festival, so if you're interested in additional local birding opportunities, be sure to check out their website!
