National Collaborating Centres for Public Health  

The NCCAH is one of six National Collaborating Centres (NCCs) working together to promote and improve the use of scientific research and other knowledge to strengthen public health practices and policies in Canada. We identify knowledge gaps, foster networks and translate existing knowledge to produce and exchange relevant, accessible, and evidence-informed products with practitioners, policy makers and researchers.

Welcome

Welcome to our autumn newsletter! I am pleased to share another quarterly update on our recent activities at the NCCAH. We have published several new reports and fact sheets on topics such as oral health, pathways to health, and an overview to Aboriginal health in Canada. We hope you enjoy, learn from, and share our new materials.

 

As usual, our newsletter also provides a summary of recent resources and upcoming events relevant to First Nations, Inuit, and M�tis peoples' health. I invite you to enjoy this newsletter and to visit the full stories and download the documents from our website.

Canadian Public Health Association 2013 Annual Conference

As key players in public health in Canada, the NCCAH and all the Collaborating Centres have a strong presence at the CPHA Annual Conference. This year the conference was in Ottawa June 9-12 and the theme was Moving public health forward: Evidence, policy, and practice.

 

On June 9th, the six National Collaborating Centres hosted an interactive networking dinner Sharing Experiences Face-to-Face. 111 people came to start the three-day conference on a strong foot - making connections with colleagues new and old. On June 10th, the NCCs are presented a collaborative session on Evidence in Action. Throughout the conference, we had a presence with an information booth offering our materials to interested attendees.

37th BC Elders Gathering

This year, the BC Elders Gathering was hosted by Lheidli T'enneh Nation, and brought over five thousand Elders to Prince George on July 9, 10, and 11, 2013. The Gatherings are a time to socialize and celebrate past accomplishments, as well as regenerate Elders for future work. It provides an opportunity for Elders to share traditional ways with visiting cultural and linguistic groups through food, songs, dances, ceremonies and more. 

The NCCAH was honoured to be able to share knowledge and resources at the gathering.

Aboriginal Early Childhood Development Assessment - Report
The NCCAH funded the research and writing of a literature review examining child development screening and assessment tools and their efficacy in Aboriginal contexts. This report is a background document for a larger project of the Public Health Agency of Canada and the BC Aboriginal Child Care Society (BC ACCS) to develop training to increase First Nations and Aboriginal Early Childhood Educators' knowledge and skill in the area of development screening and assessment.

An Overview of Aboriginal Health in Canada

This fact sheet provides a general introduction to Aboriginal health in Canada and to the broad context in which Aboriginal communities, health practitioners, policymakers and researchers seek to improve the health and well-being of Aboriginal peoples. Specifically, it provides an overview of Aboriginal peoples, the social determinants that impact their health, current health status indicators, and the jurisdictional framework for Aboriginal health policies and programs.

Pathways to Well-being: Living conditions and Indigenous health

This report provides a broad overview of socio-economic determinants of Indigenous health, including income, education, unemployment or working conditions, housing, community and social support, health care access, early childhood influences and education, healthy living, substance use (including alcohol, tobacco, and drugs), nutrition, and social exclusion. It also presents information on current interventions and their effectiveness.

Understanding Racism

null Since the time of first contact with Europeans, Aboriginal peoples in Canada have experienced several forms of racism, which have negatively affected all aspects of their lives and well-being. This paper is the first of three that will focus on anti-Aboriginal racism in Canada, beginning with an exploration of the concept of race, its history and contexts, and continuing with a discussion of the various forms of racism within societies.

Taking Care of Your Teeth

Good oral health is vital for overall health and well-being. As the World Health Organization points out, "oral health affects people physically and psychologically and influences how they grow, enjoy life, look, speak, chew, taste food and socialize, as well as their feelings of social well-being." Two new NCCAH fact sheets provide an overview of oral health for Aboriginal children and adults, describing common problems and prevention strategies.
