Over the last few years there has been a rejuvenation of interest in the mile as a competitive racing distance. Ever since Roger Bannister of England became the first male runner to go under 4 minutes for the mile in 1954, the distance has remained an epic challenge of endurance, speed and pacing strategy.

On Labor Day, September 7, 2015, we invite you to join USATF Georgia as we "celebrate the mile." There will be something on this day for every caliber of runner; an open men's mile, an open women's mile, a master men's mile, a master women's mile, and a wonderful one mile fun run for all!

The Great Labor Day Mile will be held at Gwinnett Place Mall, Duluth, Georgia, on a very fast, flat exterior loop that circles the shopping center. The course will be formally certified by USATF and will be managed by USATF certified officials.

Along with our great local Georgia athletes, we are expecting:

  • World-class milers from training groups in the Southeast such as those international athletes under Coach Robert Gary at Furman University in South Carolina and Coach Peter Rea of Zap Fitness in North Carolina.
  • World caliber senior veteran runners, such as multi-record holder Katherine Martin may also race in the event.

A "Runners Meet & Greet" will be held at center court at Gwinnett Place Mall on Sunday, September 6, 2015 - 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. during race packet pick up and registration. Several of our world class milers will be on hand to discuss all aspects of training for and running the mile. It will be a great opportunity to expose local athletes of all abilities to their training regimens and strategies for running the mile.

Both USATF Georgia LDR Chair Mike Spino and Race Director Marlene Atwood feel that the Great Labor Day Mile is a fantastic start to bringing visibility to middle distance running in Georgia and surrounding areas, and an opportunity to provide middle distance runners with well organized, quality competitions.
