USATF Georgia News & Notes - 1/13/15
Dear Members,
As we start a new year, we encourage all of our members to get involved, be involved, and stay involved with the Georgia Association and the sport we all love. Contact any of the USATF Georgia Board of Directors members at usatfga.org to find out how you can support the Association!

Someone You Should Know...
The Georgia Association was saddened by the loss of a dear member and valued official - Duncan MacGregor in December 2014. President Inez Finch, several USATF board members and several Atlanta Track Club Staff were in attendance at Duncan's memorial service this last weekend.

Sometimes it takes a memorial service to really know the depth and breadth of a man.
  • Duncan was running track and playing soccer in junior high and high school. He won the 880 yard run at an Illinois High School Association meet in May 1952. Duncan ran cross country and track at Duke University.
  • Duncan worked as an apprentice seaman on a Swedish freighter and crossed the Atlantic Ocean to attend the Olympic Games in Helsinki in 1952.
  • Duncan was in the U.S. Army and served with a police unit that patrolled the DMZ on the South Korea/North Korea border.
  • Duncan taught high school math in Decatur, Illinois and earned an M.S. degree at Illinois State University, Bloomington, IL.
  • Duncan was one of the original 110 runners of the Peachtree Road Race on July 4, 1970.
  •  Duncan served as President of the Atlanta Track Club in 1974.  He also served on the USATF Officials Committee and the USATF Budget and Finance Committee.  He was also a volunteer at many Atlanta Track Club events.

Duncan was a dedicated volunteer, husband to Carol MacGregor, and a wonderful father to his children.   He is someone you should know and someone that will be missed.

The 2014 Bowerman Award
The Bowerman is awarded each year to the top male collegiate athlete and to the top female collegiate athlete in the sport of NCAA track & field.  Past winners include Olympic gold medalist, World Champion and decathlon world-record holder Ashton Eaton (2010); 10,000-meter Olympic silver medalist Galen Rupp (2009); and 2011 IAAF World Champion at 1500 meters, Jenny Simpson (2009).

USATF Georgia would like to recognize Georgia's Kendell Williams who was a semi-finalist and on the Women's watch list for the 2014 Bowerman Award.  Although she was not selected as a finalist, Kendell still deserves a Bowerman in our eyes!
