2014 USATF Georgia Association Annual Meeting Highlights & President's Awards
The USATF Georgia Association 2014 Annual Meeting, held on Saturday, August 23, 2014, in Marietta, GA, held nice surprises for all attendees.  President Inez Finch presented several President's Awards that were not revealed prior to the meeting. In addition, everyone was excited to have three of our own world class Olympic athletes invited as keynote speakers.

Meeting Highlights:

Keynote Speakers Hazel Clark, Angelo Taylor and Terrence Trammell spoke to the audience about their current initiative - the "Future Olympians Sports Clinics"  - a program that offers affordable sports clinics, boot camps and personal training services for young athletes (ages 7 - 21) who are looking to improve their overall athletic performance, fitness and health.  They talked about the need to focus on this age group, the challenges faced (such as finding training facilities) and the overwhelming interest in the program.

The Clinicians:  Hazel Clark earned 6 national titles during her career and has served on the 2000, 2004, and 2008 Olympic teams. Her specialty is the 800 meters.  Angelo Taylor is a 3-time Olympic Gold medalist, 3-time World Champion, and 5-time USA Champion in 400 meters and 400 meter hurdles. He won gold at the 2000 Sydney and 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, and silver at the 2012 London Olympic Games. Terrence Trammell is a 3 -time silver medalilst at World Championsihips, and 2-time silver medalist at the 2000 and 2004 Olympic Games.  www.futureolympiansportsclinics.com


Business Meeting Highlights:

USATF Georgia By-Law Revision, Article 11 Composition, B. General Provisions, 1. Term of Members - aligning the commencement of the term of Committee Chairs with the term of the President  to November 1 of the election year - Passed.

Special Election for Association Treasurer - Linda Bommicino was elected to fill the position until the next election year in 2015.  She was serving as Interim Secretary until a special election could be held.

Daloria Boone, (13-14 Girls Division), Member of BaldwinCountyTrack Club. At the 2014 Indoor National Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships , March 7-9, 2014, Landover, Maryland - Prince George's CountySports and Learning Complex, Daloria placed 1st in the 55 meters setting a new meet record at 7:29. She placed 1st in the Long Jump, setting a new meet record at 5.91m. At the 2014 USATF Outdoor National Junior Olympic Track & Field Championship, July 21-27, 2014, Humble, Texas- Turner High School, she took a 1st place in the 100 meters, 4 x 100 relay, and long jump where she set a new JO National record at 6.07m.

 
Duncan MacGregor: This honoree is a 15 year USATF Official having first certified in 1999. His certifications include Finish/Start Line Administration, Track Event Operations, Horizontal Jumps, LDR/CC/Off-Track Events, and Athletics for the Disabled (all at the Association Level) as well as both Discus and Shot Put where he is a National Level Official and a consensus expert in both those events. He is one of those who have set the standard for Track & Field officiating in Georgia and in the entire Southeast.

 
Jeff Rigdon: Prior to moving to Georgia, this honoree first worked the 1984 Olympics. He works Master, Open, LDR, Youth and Track & Field and Cross Country events. You are quickly impressed by his diligence, commitment and passion for the sport. No matter the weather; heat, rain, sleet, and snow, this person is always at the meets. You will often see him riding his bicycle to guide the Youth at the Cross Country Meets. We are proud to have this dedicated person as an official with the Georgia Association.

 
Cindy Slayton: This honoree became certified as an official in 1992. As an elementary school PE teacher, she loved introducing her kids to Olympic Track & Field athletes. Not only did she serve as a official, but she served as membership chair for at least four years. This year, she coordinated officials at the Association Championship in Carrollton.. We are proud to present this President's Award to Cindy Slayton.

Linda Bommicino: This honoree helped found the Woodstock Track Club. She has served as membership chair for Georgia Association for 15 years. In addition, she has served 3 terms as treasurer. She is honest, dedicated and a workaholic. Currently, she does two jobs with USA Track & Field Georgia (Membership and Treasurer) and serves as Secretary of the National Associations Committee while holding a full time job as a consultant with IBM.

 
Matthew Chestnut: This person has been involved with youth track and cross country since 2007. He has been an avid distance runner for over 25 years and continues to "practice what he preaches" by competing in a number of races from 5 km to ultra-marathons. He is a dedicated coach of a Youth Track Team. He helps with all of the Cross Country meets by organizing the Developmental Youth Programs. Additionally, this honoree is a USATF level 1 Coach, a USATF Certified Official, and is an approved coach member of the USATF Coaches Registry.

 
Monica Ross: This person has been involves with USA Track & Field since she was an athlete. She is the founder of a Youth Track Club that has won multiple National Championships. She has served on the Youth Committee as Secretary and later as Vice President. Three years ago her team, Sapphire Track Club merged with the Ruff Riders Track Cub and WOW what a team.

 
Jason Cage and Robert Wilson - Westlake High School: The USATF Georgia Association has been an official partner with Westlake High School for several years. We originally entered into the partnership with the purpose of having a facility where Association athletes could contest the Steeplechase and the Hammer Throw. Although we were partners with WestlakeHigh School, we never officially partnered with the coaches. Without these two Coaches, our Association would not have been able to successfully execute and administer the many metro competitions that we sanction. These two Westlake coaches have willingly step up to the finish line, whenever needed. We thank them for their service and support to USA Track & Field Georgia Association.
