ATC Hosts USARC USA 10K Championship
Atlanta, Georgia
July 4, 2014

The Atlanta Track Club Peachtree Road Race went off this morning with over 60,000 runners toeing the line on Peachtree Road near Lenox Mall.  In its 44th year, the 6.2 mile race allows "citizen runners" to run with top American distance runners.

The USATF sanctioned event serves as the USA 10K Championship and is the 7th stop on the USA Running Circuit.  The top 10 finishers of each championship qualify to compete in the US National Road Racing Championships.  The 10K Championship offers a prize purse of $100,000.

Highlights of today's events:

Krige Schabort - Men's wheelchair division (5-time winner)
Tatyana McFadde - Women's wheelchair division (4-time winner) - 24:18
Amy Hastings wins women's division - 32:18
Christo Landry wins men's division - 28:22

Olympian Meb Keflezighi and 2014 Boston Marathon winner is on the course this morning, running on behalf of Atlanta Track Club's Kilometer Kids Program.  Keflezgi started the race at the very back of the pack in the hopes of passing at least 22,000 runners on his way to the finish line.  This effort will raise $75,000 for the Kilometer Kids Program.  In a recent interview, Meb advised, "For a greater cause, for the Kilometer Kids, we want to be able to give back because that's how my running started,"  Thank you Meb!

Congratulations to all participants for celebrating Independence Day with a "run down Peachtree", and to the Atlanta Track Club for their contributions to the sport of running!
