null Still Sleepy?

Have you been using CPAP regularly but still feel sleepy during the day? You are not alone.  Some people start using CPAP and feel spectacular after just the first night.  But, many others do not have such an earth-shattering experience.

There are so many factors that can affect your sleep  and energy levels, including but not limited to diet and exercise, stress level, medications, other medical conditions, and even sleep disorders other than Obstructive Sleep Apnea.

If you are using your CPAP every night all night and are still tired during the day or have trouble getting to sleep we recommend that you keep a "sleep diary" to help  isolate the possible causes of your problem.  In your sleep diary you should record the time you got up for the day, the time you went to bed the night before, and the following:
  • medications you take and the times that you take them
  • whether or not you exercised, what type, for how long and at what time of day
  • your diet(including caffeine and alcohol) for the day, and the times at which you eat and drink
  • a description of your sleep problem that night.

Keep your sleep diary for at least 2 weeks and longer if necessary.  If you are not able to determine the cause of your problem on your own and make appropriate adjustments, make an appointment with your sleep specialist for help.  Use your sleep diary as a tool to address potential issues with your doctor.

CPAP for Asthma? null

According to Sleep Diagnosis and Therapy the American Lung Association is conducting a national study to explore the possibility that CPAP therapy may be used to improve asthma symptoms.  The study is looking for non-smokers with asthma between the ages of 15 and 60 who are willing to devote 4 months to using a CPAP.

If CPAP proves to reduce asthma symptoms, patients would then have the option to take less medications, reducing costs and potential drug related side-effects such as cataracts.

null Using CPAP May Lower Systemic Inflammation

Inflammation is a normal part of  healing processes in our bodies.  However, when inflammation becomes a chronic state other diseases can result.

Researchers have reason to believe that treatment with CPAP may help reduce such chronic inflammation.  Data shows that use of CPAP for those with sleep apnea may lead to lower levels of 2 proteins which are associated with inflammation:  the C-reactive protein, or CRP, and tumor necrosis factor.
