Wisp in use Use a Variety of Masks

It is said that variety is the spice of life.   When it comes to CPAP mask comfort, this could not be more true!

Some people do very well with only one mask style.  However, there are many people who suffer with irritation and/or pressure sores from using the same mask continually.  Our skin was not designed to be bombarded by the 8 hours of friction caused by silicone seals while we sleep.  So for many, the best solution has been to use a variety of masks.

Those who use nasal masks often alternate between nasal pillows and the traditional over-the-nose mask styles.  But, if nasal pillows are too uncomfortable or do not stay in place very well, alternating over-the-nose styles can be just as effective for avoiding skin irritation.  A couple of the newer nasal masks on the market have been designed with much softer silicone and the size of the over-the-nose cushion is reduced.  With these masks, the bridge of the nose is not affected, which makes them ideal for alternating with a more traditional mask that does rest on the nose bridge.

For people who must use a full face mask, there are many styles available now that can be effectively alternated to reduce chronic friction and pressure in the same place on the face.  Newer styles are being developed with lighter, softer silicone, and more flexible features.

Every mask is designed to fit in a particular way.  And it is very important to adjust the mask using the adjustment techniques outlined for that particular mask.  Therefore, if you are following the manufacturer's guidelines and still not getting a comfortable, effective fit, it is time to find a new style.  You may be fortunate enough to find one perfect style, or you may need to consider alternating between styles.

For help with finding the best fit, please feel free to give us a call!  We have extensive knowledge of most of the masks available, and have the experience of fitting thousands of faces, including some of our own!

A study recently presented at the annual European Neurological Society meeting suggests that the severity, frequency and duration of migraines are significantly reduced in people who use CPAP.  Those who were chosen to participate in the study had to have an apnea-hypopnea index of greater than 15, or greater than 5 with clinical symptoms such as excessive daytime sleepiness, nonrefreshing sleep, sleep fragmentation, nocturia, decreased concentration, memory loss, or morning headaches.  In addition, participants had to have a diagnosis of migraine based on the International Classification of Headache Disorders.
