Know Your Pressure!
Do you know what your CPAP/Bilevel pressure setting is? If not, find out! If you do know your pressure setting, do you know if it is accurate?
Many people come to our office because their machine suddenly stopped working and they would like to rent one of our machines until theirs is repaired or they obtain a new one. Unfortunately, we are unable to help when we do not know the required pressure setting. If you travel frequently, it is a good idea to have a copy of your most current CPAP prescription with you for situations like this. If carrying a copy of your prescription is inconvenient, be sure that you are able to contact your physician or current medical equipment provider for the necessary information when you are away from home.
In general, over time and use, CPAP and bilevel machines become uncalibrated. Usually the calibration will not be off by very much-a half to one centimeter. But it is a good idea to have your machine checked by your equipment provider periodically to make sure it is putting out the amount of pressure ordered by your doctor.
Your equipment provider will use a manometer to measure the actual pressure output of your machine, and can then make the proper adjustment to ensure that you are receiving the pressure therapy ordered by your doctor.

The Wisp by Respironics
 |
Click on photo for more information.
|
The Wisp is amazing! The seal is so soft and light, it feels like you are not wearing anything at all! The design allows for the seal to fit only the bottom half of your nose, eliminating pressure and pain at the bridge, and there is no forehead support to block your line of vision. The headgear is available with a silicone frame or fabric frame--both very soft and lightweight as well. Other features include easy release snaps for taking the mask on and off and a springy tube attachment that adds length between you and the machine as well as reduces drag that can dislodge the seal.
If you would like to try this mask on, call us to schedule a time to meet with our technician--the visit is free, but we do need to put you in our schedule so that we can allow for enough time to give you the attention you deserve!

PTSD and It's Affects on Sleep
The National Sleep Foundation posted an outstanding article this month written by a physician who has treated people with sleep disorders that resulted from post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). A majority of the cases involved people who had experienced horrible traumas during combat. However, the article also makes mention of ordinary civilians who also suffer from PTSD for a variety of reasons and have trouble with sleep.
The author provides some information about how nightmares and insomnia are treated in patients with PTSD. It is definitely worth reading for yourself, and you can find the entire article here.Sleep Deprivation and Moral Judgment Stored in the archives of WebMD is an article addressing the impact that sleep deprivation has on a person's ability to make moral judgments. A study was conducted by Maj. William Killgore, PhD at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Medicine in Maryland, which was published in the journal Sleep.
