Boat No Water Dryness with CPAP

Are you suffering with a dry mouth and/or nose from using CPAP?  If your mouth is dry, you just might need to use a full face mask (one that covers mouth and nose). But, should you already be using a full face mask and your mouth is still dry, or if you are experiencing nasal dryness, irritation, and/or bleeding, your next step is to humidify the air you are breathing.

Most, if not all, modern PAP machines come with an integrated humidifier system. Make sure your equipment provider has included the humidifier with your unit.  However, if you have a machine that does not have a humidifier made specifically for it, there are "free standing" humidifiers that can be added to your CPAP.  Many people ask whether or not a room humidifier will work. Unfortunately, unless you have your room humidifier set to "swamp" level, there still will not be adequate moisture reaching your airway from the air traveling through the PAP machine.

If you are already using a humidifier but still experiencing dryness, try raising the humidifier setting.  The warmer the air, the more moisture it can hold.  With traditional tubing, you might experience condensation (or rain-out) as the moist air travels through the cooler tubing.  The result may be an accumulation of water in your mask.  While this will not cause you to drown, it can be noisy and uncomfortable and is a sign that you are not getting all of the needed moisture to your tissues. There are a couple of solutions to this problem as well.

The least expensive solution is to insulate your tubing. There are several products on the market which are designed to do this. We carry two products: Snugglehose, and a quilted cover with a zipper made by PAPillow. People have reported that adding a tubing cover reduces rain-out significantly, while making the tubing softer and less medical looking.

The more expensive, but probably ideal solution is to add heated tubing to your PAP machine. Currently there are three PAP machine series on the market that are designed to accommodate heated tubing:  the Icon series by Fisher & Paykel, the S9 series by ResMed, and the System One series by Respironics.  Heated tubing makes a huge difference in the quality and amount of humidity that reaches your nose and mouth.  If unable to get adequate relief with a standard humidifier and tubing, consider purchasing a PAP machine with heated tubing. For those of you who are utilizing insurance coverage for your sleep apnea supplies, be sure that your physician specifically requests heated tubing on your prescription.

Breathing warm, moist air is more natural for your body and warm air actually carries more water particles to your nose/mouth than cool or cold air.  Making a few adjustments can help ease the pain and discomfort caused by a dry airway and will ensure that you are reaping the full benefits of your positive airway therapy.

Contour PillowBed Pillows for CPAP Users...Are They Worth It?

People ask about the efficacy of the various bed pillows on the market that are designed specifically for CPAP users. These pillows actually can be very effective.

CPAP bed pillows are designed with cut-outs on each side of the head which leave room for the mask when lying on your side.  Some designs have a slightly elevated roll at the base of the neck which serves to align the cervical spine while lifting the chin off of the pillow.  This lift prevents the mask from coming into contact with the pillow in a way that would cause it to move and leak.

We are also often asked which pillow is the best design.  Unfortunately, we cannot give a definitive answer to anyone because each person's anatomy, mask, and personal preferences are so different.  We can, however, explain the differences in pillow materials, sizes, and basic functionality.

We carry 4 different pillows at EZ CPAP and each has had its successes and failures.  If you would like to know more about our pillows, please feel free to read about them on our website (each picture shown below is a link to the web page), or call us at 877-780-8128.

We do recommend that if you have a medical problem with your neck that you consult with your doctor before using any of these pillows.

Pills Sleep Drugs and Driving

The FDA is warning consumers about the potential for certain medications used to treat insomnia to impair a person's ability to perform certain tasks the day after use.  Driving is one of the most dangerous tasks that can be impaired!

At this time, the particular drug in question is zolpidem.  Zolpidem is now available in generic form, but it is more commonly known as Ambien and Ambien CR.  Other brand names are Edluar and Zolpimist.  The FDA is suggesting that manufacturers of this medication lower the recommended doses.

If you are taking a medication for insomnia, please discuss this information with your physician.  To read more about this issue, click here.

Treating Sleep Disordered Breathing During Pregnancy Pregnant Woman

A new study suggests that treating women who suffer from preeclampsia and mild sleep disordered breathing during pregnancy with CPAP improves fetal movement and overall outcomes.

Preeclampsia is a dangerous condition in which the mother has high blood pressure and passes protein in the urine after the 20th week of pregnancy.  What has been considered in the past only "minor snoring" during pregnancy is now being looked at as having a significant effect on the blood supply going to the developing fetus.

Sleeping Girl Scientists Finding 10% of 6 to 8-year old Children Have Sleep Disordered Breathing

A recent study conducted in Finland has revealed that approximately 10% of 6-8 year old kids are suffering from some level of sleep disordered breathing.  Risk factors include enlarged tonsils, cross bite and a convex facial structure.  What is most interesting is that excess body fat was not associated with an increased risk for developing sleep disordered breathing.
