SCHOOL NURSES

School Nurses provide substantial medical care and offer critical services for the students of Virginia's public schools. In recognition of National School Nurse Day in May, the Virginia PTA honors one (1) outstanding school nurse in an Elementary, Middle/Junior High and High School PTA/PTSA.

For the purpose of this award, a school nurse is anyone who provides health care services for students on a full or part time basis at the local school. The School Nurse must be a member of the PTA/PTSA. Winners are announced in the Voice, on the Virginia PTA website, and recognized at the Annual Conference in July.

To nominate a nurse, please click here.  http://www.vapta.org/members-only/local-unit-resource-guide-lurg/award-programs/nurse-of-the-year.html.

Nominations must be postmarked by April 1, 2014.

ST. JUDE'S MATH A THON

March means it is time for the St. Jude's Math A Thon. This year, the SCA has set a goal of $2,000 for the patients of St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital. On March 5, your child brought home the Math A Thon envelope and permission form. If your child wishes to participate, please detach the permission form and return it to your child's teacher by Wednesday, March 12. On the permission form, indicate if you would like a printed copy of the Funbook or if your child will use the Online Funbook. Once your child receives the Funbook, he/she may begin working on the math problems.

All money is due by Wednesday, April 9, 2014. On the envelope, you will see the variety of prizes your child may choose depending on how much money they collect. Be sure to indicate your child's prize choice if he/she has collected the specified amount.

For additional information or to follow our progress online, please visit http://fundraising.stjude.org/site/TR/Math/Math?fr_id=13363&pg=entry . Your child can register on this site. Once registered, your child will be able to access the Online Funbook from their personal page. Then you can email friends and family and begin receiving online donations! Thank you for your participation and support of St. Jude's and math.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION BUILDS HEALTHY BODIES

Encouraging your kids to play sports is one of the best ways to help them develop healthy habits that will last a lifetime. But some parents take that support too far by emphasizing winning rather than developing skills and having fun. The crazy sports parent isn't that uncommon. Here are some tips to make sure you don't become one of them:  http://sportsmedicine.about.com/od/children/a/SportParentTips.htm
